New England Patriots Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Patriots not only have the best odds to win the AFC East, but the AFC and the Super Bowl as well. Tom Brady is the reigning MVP and the Pats’ offense should be solid once again, but the big question mark in New England is on defense, especially in the secondary.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 14-2 SU, 10-5-1 ATS
Projection this season – 12-4 (1st AFC East)
Patriots Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +600
Patriots 2011/12 AFC Odds +280
2011/2012 Patriots AFC East Lines -125

Brady had 3,900 yards passing last season with 36 TD and only 4 INT and he has 2 veteran receivers in Wes Welker and Deion Branch. This duo is solid, but will not instill any fear in any opposing secondary, which is why the Pats may hit free agency to bring in another top-notch receiver.

The TE combo of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski combined for 87 catches and over 1,000 receiving yards and if the Pats can pick up another solid receiver their offense may be scary good.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis (1,008 yards) and Danny Woodhead (547 yards) led a New England rushing offense that ranked 9th last season. These 2 guys compliment each other very well and they will have a lot of room to run this season since most teams will concentrate on containing Brady and the passing attack.

Rookies Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley will also be in the mix, as head coach Bill Belichick is high on these guys and they will get a chance to show what they can do this season.

OT Nate Soldier was the team’s first round draft pick and he will be joining a veteran line that knows how to protect the QB and open up holes for the running game.

The Patriots offense? No problems. The Patriots defense? Problems. The front line defense is decent and ranked 11th in the league last season in run defense and Jerrod Mayo is one of the best young LB in the league.

New England has not upgraded their line in the last few drafts and it has showed. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The major concern for the Pats is their pass defense, which ranked 30th in the league last season. Devin McCourtney and 2nd round steal Ras I Dowling may, one day, be a great DB tandem, but they are young and need to step up right away.

Patrick Chung and Brandon Meriweather both struggled at the S position last season and if that happens again the Patriots may give up a lot of big plays down the field.

The Patriots play one of the toughest schedules in football, as besides AFC East games they face all the teams from the NFC East as well as the Chargers, Colts, and Steelers.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

Brady will have another MVP type season and the offense should be a high scoring one, again, and if the defense improves the Pats may be THE team to beat in the AFC this season.

Still, with the issues in the secondary and the schedule they play I see them winning 2 fewer games than last season (12), but still winning the AFC East.

Season Win Total Prediction: 12
