A look at the numbers:
Last season – 9-7 SU, 8-7-1 ATS
Projection this season – 10-6 (1st in AFC West)
Chargers Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +1200
Chargers 2011/12 AFC Odds – +550
2011 Chargers AFC West Lines – -200
San Diego must avoid another typical bad start, as last season they lost 5 of their first 7 games.
The Chargers also have to get over starting slow in games, as they tend to come out flat and then explode in the 2nd half. Head coach Norv Turner is on the hot-seat and he has to find out how to motivate his team.
QB Phillip Rivers led a passing offense that ranked 2nd in the NFL last season and this was with a patchwork WR corps. WR Vincent Jackson may be headed out of sunny San Diego and even with the addition of 3rd round draft pick WR Vincent Brown the Chargers may need to hit the free agent market to give Rivers another receiving weapon. TE Antonio Gates led the Chargers with only 50 receptions last season and he and Jackson combined to miss 17 games last season.
One key for the success of the Chargers this season is 2nd year RB Ryan Mathews. He was injured often last season and he will need to stay healthy and emerge as a #1 back for the Chargers to go far in the playoffs. He and Mike Tolbert have to take some pressure off Rivers this season.
The offensive line is solid, but they struggled on 3rd and short last season and that killed them at the end of games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
The Chargers’ defense was stellar on paper last season ranking 1st against the pass and 4th against the run. Still, even with those solid numbers they gave up too many big plays in big games. They need to force more turnovers this season and first round pick DT Corey Liuget was a solid pick and he may start right away.
DE Luis Castillo and NT Antonio Garay are 2 of the best in the league against the run and the secondary is one with a lot of youth and talent
FS Eric Weddle and SS Paul Oliver are a talented duo in the secondary and with a solid pass rush these guys and the rest of the secondary have to pick off some more balls. CB Marcus Gilchrist was drafted in the 2nd round to give the secondary more depth.
The beginning of the season is vital for the Chargers, as in the middle of the season they face 4 teams that made the playoffs last season. In 3 of their first 5 games they face teams that were under .500 last season.
HOW IT STANDS NOW
The Chargers are THE team to beat in the AFC West, but they still have issues. Mathews has to stay healthy and motivation is key for a San Diego team that has more talent than the other teams in the division.

I don’t know how I feel about the Chiefs this year. I mean personally I hate them, but I also think Charles is a special back and could lead them to an AFC west title…seriously though…I almost hate them as much as the Raiders…
