Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 4-12 SU, 7-9 ATS
Projection this season – 6-10 (third in AFC West)

If you believe that offenses and defenses are built from the line out, then you can pretty much forget about the Chiefs making a long-shot run to the playoffs this season. The defensive line is filled with underachievers and the offensive line has a toxic mix of players either too old or too inexperienced.

But all is not lost. Kansas City has some talent, plays in a division that has some winnable games, and has two new coordinators – Charlie Weis on offense and Romeo Crennel – who have been through the wars and have the knack of getting their players to work hard for 16 games.

There are some playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Jamaal Charles was a revelation during the second half of the season, rushing for 968 yards in the final 8 games.

Charles, though, will have to share the rock with Thomas Jones, who ran for 1,402 yards for the Jets last year before being dumped.

If the O-line can man up and the running backs remain effective, that would make life a lot more fun for QB Matt Cassel (16 TDs, 16 INTs last season), who was a bit shell-shocked last season when opponent after opponent brought pressure on him and dared him to make decisions under duress.

Management may not be sold completely on Cassel, but he’s making big money and backup Brodie Croyle is 0-9 lifetime as a starter, so Cassel is the guy for now.

KC got off to an 0-5 start last season, and the Chiefs couldn’t stop anyone (except Oakland, but that’s no prize). The secondary is decent and bolstered by top draft choice Eric Berry, but there is concern in KC that the team may have whiffed on top-5 draft choices Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson.

The defensive ends combined for all of one QB sack last season, and a repeat of that ineptitude would stifle any move north in the AFC West standings.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Coach Todd Haley doesn’t have an easy job on his hands, and he has three important jobs in training camp: 1. Create order in the offensive line 2. Figure out a way to get something – anything – out of Jackson and Dorsey, and 3. Find out if Cassel is a top-15 NFL quarterback.
