The Ravens don’t do things quite like most other teams.
They don’t really care about scoring quickly, and in an era when offenses are dominating, their success comes from advantages due to toughness and defensive matchups.
On a team that runs the ball more times (592 in 2008) than anyone else, is it really surprising that rookie Joe Flacco experienced great success? Is it a shock that a defense that led the league in interceptions (26) gave the team great field position game after game?
Basically, what you see is what you get with the Ravens. Keep it close until the fourth period and we’ll see who blinks first.
Last season it produced an 11-5 record, a playoff victory over Tennessee and nearly got these guys to the Super Bowl. So there’s no real need to shake up things too much.
The Ravens lost defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and linebacker Bart Scott, and figure to be without WR Derrick Mason (probably retired) and veteran placekicker Matt Stover. Not to worry. Willis McGahee, Ray Rice and Le’Ron McClain will pound the ball again, Flacco will be encouraged to not turn over the ball, and the defense (Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Ed Reed) will once again make trips to Maryland very uncomfortable.
Surprising stat: From late October on the Ravens were the best cover team in the NFL. Starting with an Oct. 19 victory over the Dolphins in Miami, Baltimore covered the number 10 of 12 times.
Team strengths: It’s always been about defense in Baltimore. But not having any high-profile offensive stars enables the front office to spend money building depth and create training camp competition.
Team Weakness: Keep an eye on the secondary, where the Ravens have jettisoned veterans Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister, and replaced them with draftees Domonique Foxworth and Chris Carr.

The Ravens have to find a way to beat the Steelers if they have any hope of winning the AFC North. Pittsburgh beat them three times last season, including the divisional playoffs.
Fortunately for Baltimore, I think Pittsburgh will suffer a bit of a let down after last year’s Super Bowl run.
