Like slow-setting cement, things are starting to come together bit by bit in Green Bay.The Parkers are now a full year removed from the Brett Favre nonsense, they know they have a decent triggerman in Aaron Rodgers, defensive coordinator Dom Capers has signed on to repair one of the league’s worst defenses and putrid special teams play will get special attention in training camp.
AParticular focus will be on Capers, who will make the Packers one of only a few NFC teams to employ the 3-4 defense. The centerpiece will be nose tackle and No. 1 draft choice B.J. Raji. A second first-round pick was spent on Clay Matthews, who along with A.J. Hawk will give the Pack a better-than-decent pair of linebackers. Whether the defense can adjust fast enough to the new defensive set will determine if the Packers can move from 6-10 last season to 9-7 or 10-6 and a playoff berth this year.
Rodgers was easily the best QB in the NFC North last season, and his numbers pretty much replaced what GB got from Favre in 2007. The front office would gladly take 4,308 yards, 28 TDs, 13 INTs and 63 percent completion average for the next decade.
Besides Rodgers, the playmakers will be the same as in 2008 – RB Ryan Grant and WRs Donald Driver and Greg Jennings.
In the end, though, it will come down to the defense, which will have to get a lot better if GB wants to avoid a stretch like last season, when the Packers won only one game between Oct. 20 and Christmas.
Surprising stat: The Packers were 3-7 ATS in non-NFC North games last season.
Team strengths: The Packer offense should move the ball as well as the Bears and better than the Vikings and Lions in a winnable NFC North. That, and a very benign first-half schedule, should buy time for the defense to get its feet planted.
Team Weakness: Something needs to be done about special teams play. The Pack were dead last last season in kickoff returns, and well down in the dregs in other special teams categories.
