Was last season serendipity? Or are these guys for real?

There is certainly star power in Atlanta. The Falcons can brag about the best running game in the league (Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood), a serious star-in-making in QB Matt Ryan, and a TE Hall of Famer-to-be (Tony Gonzalez). Atlanta Falcons 2009 NFL Football Future Lines

The only things holding back Super Bowl talk in Georgia are vivid memories of the egg the Falcons laid in the playoff loss last year at Arizona, and an untested defense that could give up yardage in large chucks in the offense-oriented NFC South.

The Falcons defense will have a different look this season. Longtime LB Keith Brooking has been shown the door, as has safety Lawyer Milloy, CB Dominique Foxworth, LB Michael Boley and DT Grady Jackson. The newcomers include veteran LB Mike Peterson, but basically the Falcons re-stocked via the draft and the kids will have to learn quickly.

Everyone in the NFL feels that Gonzalez can only help a solid offense which didn’t have much use for the tight end last season. Gonzalez could slow down the pass rush on Ryan, who doesn’t have great mobility.

Surprising stat: In the 30-24 playoff loss in Arizona, the Falcons rushed for only 60 yards – their lowest total of the season.

Team strengths: Somehow, some way the franchise has moved on from the Michael Vick BS and is pointed in the right direction. From 4-12 to 11-5 is an amazing turnaround, and the front office deserves tons of credit.

Team Weakness: Can anyone really get a feel for what they’re trying to do defensively? With so few playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons will have their hands full in the South, where everyone can score. Even if they can hold serve again in the division (they were 3-3 last season), out-of-division games against the NFC East and AFC will be nasty.

Coming off a strong 2008 season, the Falcons have found their franchise QB in Matt Ryan. The acquisition of TE Tony Gonzalez will give Ryan a favorite target along with WR Roddy White. White set the Falcons record for yards from receptions in a single season and has had two straight 1,000-yard years. Combined with a strong running game from RB Michael Turner, Atlanta will have a formidable offense in 2009. The defense is another story. With the loss of many key players including LB Keith Brooking and CB Domonique Foxworth, it will take a year for a new defensive squad to gel. The Falcons will again be strong in 2009 finishing at 10-6.
