The Eagles seem to have an answer for everything. They rebound from controversy, they win enough to placate their restive fan base and their coach persists through nightmarish personal problems.

So you have to assume that they will find a way to compensate for the diminished offensive output from all-around back Brian Westbrook. Westbrook’s numbers took a dive last season – 22 fewer yards gained per game — and his receptions total dropped from 90 to 54. His yards-per-catch total has fallen for three straight seasons. Oh, he turns 30 in about a month and has had so many injuires that he is on a first-name basis with doctors and nurses at Jefferson University Hospital.

With Westbrook in a fade pattern, perhaps the Eagles’ offense will be opened up this season. Second-year WR DeSean Jackson (62 catches, 912 yards, 2 TDs last season) is joined by speedy high draft choice Jeremy Maclin, and Philly spent a second-round pick on RB LeSean McCoy to ease the load on Westbrook. QB Donovan McNabb has a lot of options as he enters his mid-30s.

The Eagles have made several moves on the offensive line, primarily gassing veteran Tra Thomas and bringing in underachiever Jason Peters from Buffalo.

Safety Brian Dawkins, who basically ran the team’s attacking defense, is out the door, but the defense that remains doesn’t have to apologize. Trent Cole (9 sacks) leads an 8-deep defensive line, the linebackers are solid with Stewart Bradley in the middle, and the secondary has sniper Asante Samuel at one corner and All-Pro safety Quintin Mickell.

Surprising stat: Opposing offenses converted on only 32 percent of third-down plays last season.

Team strengths: These guys underachieved last season and had to go balls-to-the-wall to make the playoffs. With a soft early schedule it’s unlikely the Eagles will slip coming out of the gate, and they should be in the thick of things when the bullets really start flying in December.

Team Weakness: If, if if …. If Westbrook’s history of injuries starts to take a real toll and he misses significant time, and if the defense misses Dawkins more than expected, and if Dallas and Washington are better than expected…

…but that’s a lot of ifs.

This teams depends on the health of both Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb. If both can avoid injuries that have plagued them in the past, this team will win the NFC

Donovan McNabb should have a huge year in 2009 earning him a trip to the Pro Bowl. The Eagles ended last year on a tear after starting the season off slow. The air attack will be solid as McNabb will have first round draft pick WR Jeremy Maclin to throw to along with WR Desean Jackson, who proved himself as a playmaker in 2008. The ground attack will be the Eagles Achilles. With the departure of Correll Buckhalter and the potentially career ending injury dealt to Westbrook, second round draft pick LeSean McCoy will get more playing time than originally anticipated. The Eagles were ranked third overall on defense a year ago and since they have had no significant changes, expect a repeat performance of incredible stoppage from the Eagles. The Eagles will finish the season with an 11-5 record, just barely edging out the Cowboys to win the division.
