Season Over/Under Win Total Betting Odds From beted.com – 7
Tony Sparano proved last season he can bleed every last drop of blood out of his players. He’ll have to do it again this season if the Dolphins expect to get even a sniff of 11-5.
The foundation includes:
***Chad Pennington, who was tossed aside by the Jets in favor of Brett Favre and finished second in the MVP voting.
***Joey Porter, who despite being on the bad side of 30 still led the AFC with 17.5 sacks.
LB Bart Scott was pilfered from those Ravens, and he joins some pretty good returning defenders, including safety Kerry Rhodes.
***Jake Long, who looks like he’ll be the dominant left tackle in the AFC East for the next decade.
Bill Parcells is building this team the same way he built the Patriots and Dolphins – bringing in veterans and creating depth and competition. Was this team really 1-15 in 2007?
The Dolphins offense was all about not screwing up. Pennington tossed the 10- to 15-yard passes like he invented them, and tight ends Anthony Fasano and David Martin combined for 65 catches and 10 TDs. Using two-tight end sets also made things easier for RBs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, and helped usher in the Wildcat.
Whether they run the Wildcat much this season is anyone’s guess, but the Dolphins spent a second-round pick on running QB Pat White just to keep defensive coordinators occupied in game prep.
Surprising stat: Last season Miami had only one win against a team which finished the season over .500 (New England in Week 3).
Team strengths: The Dolphins are frustrating to play to because they protect the ball (+17 turnover differential) and rarely gamble. Pennington is perfect for this offense, completing 67 percent of his passes last season.
Team Weakness: Miami can’t stretch the field. Ted Ginn Jr. isn’t the joke that many thought he would be, but neither is he a game-breaker. Good defenses adjust, as Baltimore did in the playoffs last season.
