They couldn’t stop the run, couldn’t run the ball themselves and their special-teams play caused small children to run into the street screaming. Yet the Colts found a way to go 12-4 in the regular season and made it to within one play of the AFC Championship Game, so it doesn’t make much sense to sell these guys short – even in a transition year.

Major changes take place — on the sidelines (Tony Dungy out, Jim Caldwell in), backfield (Joseph Addai will have to share the rock with Donald Brown) and defensive line (more beef, less finesse).Indianapolis Colts 2009 NFL Football Future Lines

Despite the problems in the offensive line, Peyton Manning was able to stay upright and was his old self after recovering from knee surgery prior to training camp. Manning’s numbers over the final 9 games (16 TDs, 3 INTs) showed he was all the way back.

Drafting Brown was in response to alarm caused by Addai’s numbers dropping off for the second straight season – he averaged only 3.4 yards a carry in 2008.

What you saw last year defensively will be pretty much what you see this season, though draftees Fila Moala and Terrance Taylor will add some bulk to the heretofore undersized D-line. The linebackers and secondary are both solid.

Surprising stat: The Colts had a far better record against the over on grass (5-2) than on artificial turf (3-6) last season.

Team strengths: Until he retires this team will be all about Manning and the passing game. Reggie Wayne is a Top-10 receiver, Anthony Gonzalez is a solid No. 2 who rarely drops the ball, and the Colts don’t figure to miss Marvin Harrison, who basically only collected a paycheck last season.

Team Weakness: OK, they said the same thing last year about improving special teams play, but Caldwell has to make it a training camp priority. Maybe Indy should take a page from New England’s playbook of a few years ago when some regulars took turns on kickoff coverage.

Super Bowl caliber once again. They just have to have a little luck. Peyton Manning makes their offense potent all by himself. Then, you add on Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez at receiver. The offensive line did not impress me last year and forced running back Joseph Addai, to take a beating. Defensively the Giants are solid with defensive end Dwight Freeney, Bob Sanders at safety and Robert Mathis.

10 or 11 wins for this team is very realistic when you realize that they have won that many games or more the past several seasons. I see the Colts winning the AFC South, but I think they will peak there, going out early in the playoffs again.

The Colts will look a bit different this year with long time WR Marvin Harrison gone and without head coach Tony Dungy on the sidelines. However, the Colts do have one the best quarterbacks to ever play the game in Peyton Manning. The veteran shows no signs of slowing. WR Reggie Wayne had already solidified himself as the team’s number one wide out, even before Harrison was let go. Anthony Gonzalez is an excellent number two receiver who fits in nicely with the Colts offense. Dallas Clark is one of the leagues best tight ends and should round out the Colts passing attack. The running game will be solid with 2009 first round pick Donald Brown backing up starter Joseph Addai. The defense will be solid. The Colts will reclaim the division title, finishing at a record of 11-5.
