Let’s take a look at the numbers:
betED NFL Football Betting Odds – Chicago Bears Odds To Win NFC North – +180
Season Over/Under Win Total Betting Odds From beted.com – 8.5
Say hello to the new face of the franchise – a petulant man-child who stomps his feet when he doesn’t get what he wants, then denies doing it.If Jay Cutler is the difference in a very winnable NFC North, Bears fans won’t care that he whined his way out of Denver, any more than Patriots fans cared when Randy Moss started catching TD passes in his first year in Foxboro.
Assuming Cutler is able to move the chains at Soldier Field, he’ll be able to at least somewhat make up for some of the team’s defensive deficiencies. Chicago gave up more yards through the air than all but two teams last season, due in no small part to problems that the front seven had getting to the quarterback.
Brian Urlacher still sells shirts in the pro shop, but he’s coming off neck surgery and Lance Briggs could supplant him as the team’s best linebacker.
The Bears drew to an inside straight last season when Matt Forte came out of nowhere and finished 7th in the league in rushing. Cutler’s presence can only help take the heat off Forte, who stayed healthy all season and ran consistently if not spectacularly.
Surprising stat: Four times last season Bears opponents gained more than 400 yards.
Team strengths: Cutler got all the pub, but don’t overlook the signings of offensive linemen Orlando Pace, Frank Omiyale and Kevin Shaffer. If these guys create holes for Forte, give Cutler time to throw and everyone stays healthy, the Bears offense could challenge the 2006 group, which averaged 27 points a game on the way to the Super Bowl.
Team Weakness: You need only watch the last game of the season – a 31-24 loss to Houston in which the Texans ran up 455 yards – to realize what the problem is. The Bears couldn’t get to the QB all season, which made a mediocre secondary look even worse than it already was.
Bears 2009 Season Win Total Prediction – 9
Next Up: Green Bay Packers
