Hokies vs. Eagles Preview/Pick

The Virginia Tech Hokies go at it against the Boston College Eagles this week in a Saturday Football matchup. We preview and pick this week 8 clash.

NCAA Football Betting – Virginia Tech Hokies at Boston College Eagles

The two teams who met in the ACC championship game last season will meet up again on Saturday, as the Boston College Eagles (4-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) play host to the Virginia Tech Hokies (5-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) in NCAA college football betting action that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Alumni Stadium (artificial turf) in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Saturday, October 18
BetUS NCAAF Betting Odds: BOSTON COLLEGE -3, Total 41.5

Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

* VT has won its last five games SU
* VT has won and covered seven of its last eight road games
* VT has played seven of its last ten road games
* BC has won five of its last six games SU
* BC has won 21 of its last 24 home games SU

Also….

* BC has covered seven of the last nine meetings
* VT has won nine of the last 12 meetings SU
* Four of the last five meetings have gone UNDER the total
* VT has won five of the last six meetings SU as the road team

Frank Beamer is sure glad he took the redshirt off Tyrod Taylor, who’s only thrown the ball 70 times (with just a single TD pass), and run for over five yards a carry. Because the Gobblers seem a little land-locked, that almost wastes Boston College’s pass defense, which has surrendered just one TD while picking off ten passes.

It has been very hard to gauge what BC can really do, because the schedule has been relatively light. The Eagles have pitched two shutouts, but they were against Kent State and Rhode Island. And there was a narrow escape against North Carolina State.

If I were Beamer, I would be worried about Boston College stuffing my running game, since the Eagles have proven themselves to be pretty stingy there as well (3.1 ypc allowed). But the Hokies, even after having let go of Brandon Ore, are in a position to make headway on the ground, not just with the elusive Taylor, but with Darren Evans (415 yards), although it’s a tough break that Kenny Lewis is out for the season with an Achilles injury.

Tech has been in some tense situations. They are, of course, a blocked punt away from an undefeated season and possible national title contention, and they have been in close games with the likes of North Carolina (20-17), Georgia Tech (20-17 also) and Nebraska (35-30). In other words, they’re battle-tested against credible opposition. That counts for us here. So even though we respect BC quarterback Chris Crane’s 428 passing yards and five TD’s (three rushing, two passing) last week against NC State, we dare him to repeat that against this Virginia Tech unit.

Let’s take the points with the Hokies, the three-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.

Our PLAY: VIRGINIA TECH +3 ***
