One of the Big 10’s most underrated rivalries takes place Saturday afternoon, when the Penn State Nittany Lions visit the Big House to play the Michigan Wolverines.

For Michigan, it has already been a season to remember in their second under Rich Rodriguez. One more win will make them bowl eligible after missing the postseason for the first time in over 30 years in 2008.

The Wolverines are led by a young and dynamic offensive backfield led by quarterback Tate Forcier. Forcier, who has split time this year with fellow freshman Denard Robinson, has been fantastic, as he has already thrown for over 1000 yards and nine touchdowns, as well as rushing for an additional two. Carlos Brown and Brandon Minor split carries in the backfield. It is important to note that all three of those players are coming off injuries, and neither Brown nor Minor played in last week’s win over Delaware State.

The Michigan defense is led by future 1st Round NFL Draft pick Brandon Graham. On the season, they are giving up just 21 points a game, but the 363 yards on the ground is simply too many. They will need to play better against Penn State.

Speaking of the Nittany Lions, after a loss to Iowa just a few weeks ago, they are quietly creeping back up the polls at 6-1. Their offense is led by senior quarterback Daryll Clark and running back Evan Royster, who on the season have combined for 21 touchdowns.

However, like every good Penn State team, this group is known for their tenacious defense. Navarro Bowman leads this unit, which is ranked 2nd in college football, allowing just nine points per game, and ranked 5th in total yardage, at just a shade over 238 yards. The Nittany Lions rushing defense- ranked 6th in college football- will be key in this game.

Looking only at the statistics in this one, it’d be easy to jump on the Lions and not look back. When you factor in Michigan’s injuries, it’s even more reason to like Penn State.

But this is also basically Michigan’s first big home game since Week 2 against Notre Dame, and first Big 10 home game since Indiana came to town the last weekend in September.

The Wolverines will be fired up, and do enough to beat the college football betting odds in this one.

Pick: Michigan +4
