It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost a month since Virginia Tech Hokies played a game on a Saturday. After a bye and two straight Thursday games, they’ll get back to a regular routine against Maryland this weekend.

For the Hokies it’s been an up-and-down 2009 season, which started with a tough loss to Alabama, and came screeching to a halt with two more losses in their last three games.

They are led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, one of the most elusive quarterbacks in all of college football. While his passing game is still a work in progress, Taylor has rushed for four touchdowns in the last four games. Joining him in the backfield, is one of college football’s biggest surprises, Ryan Williams.

The redshirt freshman, who has only played this season because of injuries to the two guys in front of him, has taken full advantage of the opportunity, as he is currently ranked eighth in college football with 1109 yards on the season. He had his best game last Thursday against East Carolina, when he ran for 179 yards on 26 carries.

As usual, Virginia Tech’s defense has played phenomenally. On the season, they are ranked in the top 25 in both scoring offense (20 th) and total defense (23 rd). They are led by All-ACC defensive end Jason Worilds.

While Virginia Tech still has something to play for, Maryland Terrapins is strictly playing for pride, as they’ve lost four straight, and six out of seven. Offensively, they’ve been ravaged by injuries, and it might not get any better this week, as quarterback Chris Turner is questionable with a sprained MCL.

If he can’t go, that likely means that Jamarr Robinson, a sophomore will probably be under center. Robinson completed 5 of 11 passes in relief of Turner last weekend for 29 yards. Maryland also currently has the worst defense in the ACC, allowing 32 points per game.

There’s no pretty way to put it, Maryland is in trouble, and they don’t stand much of a chance against Virginia Tech Saturday. At best, all they can hope for is that the Hokies beat themselves with penalties or turnovers, because otherwise, there probably isn’t much chance for the Terps to win. As I mentioned before, they’ve won just one of their last seven games.

The simple truth is Virginia Tech has better athletes on offense, defense and special teams. They are better prepared and better coached. Even though they haven’t been scoring a lot, the best remedy for a struggling offense right now is Maryland’s defense.

Expect the Hokies to cover, in this week’s BetUS.com College football betting odds.
