Arizona State hasn’t won at Memorial Stadium since a 28-21 victory back in 1997, but his may be their best shot, as Cal’s hot start seems to have chilled.

When the two teams played last year in Tempe, Giorgio Tavecchio kicked a 24-yard field goal to win the game for Cal, 23-21. Now the Sun Devils will attempt to return the favor in the G-Bears house, using their momentum from a 24-14 win over Washington in Week 6 that ended a three- game-losing skid. Arizona State put up 14 points in the first quarter, and added seven more in the second, before Thomas Weber connected with a 22-yard field goal to ice the game.

The defense did its job keeping the Huskies off the board in the second and third quarters, and for the season ranks 51st in points against with 22.7, which includes the home opener against Portland where it only allowed nine.

Coming off a bye, the Devils should be well rested including QB Steven Threet who despite the rain soaked conditions in Seattle, completed passes to nine different receivers for 288 yards, two touchdowns and a single INT.

Over in LA the Golden Bears were busy being pounded by the Trojans 48-14. USC held the G-Bears off the scoreboard until the second half, while rolling up 589 total yards of its own.

RB Shane Vereen scored on a 31-yard screen pass late in the third quarter to avoid the shutout, but it would be too late for any sort of rally.

The Trojans defense, that ranked 100th in the FBS coming into the contest, spent most of the day chasing Cal QB Kevin Riley who passed for just 193 yards and completed only 15 of 29 passes with two interceptions. It was a good example of the issues that remain long the Bears’ offensive line.

Now the Devils will be challenged by a Trojans defense that held Cal to just 10 first downs, while yielding just 245 total yards; 52 of them on the ground.

Looking to reverse that, will be the ASU rushing duo of Kyle Middlebrooks and Cameron Marshall who combined to rush for 99 yards on 19 carries in the win over the Huskies. Marshall has the goods, and is pacing the ground attack with six touchdowns on 70 carries for 357 yards.

Meanwhile, the Sun Devils defense led by linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who sat out the entire first quarter after being benched by the Arizona State coaching staff for reckless play against Oregon State the prior week, will be tasked with containing the Bears’ Vereen who does his best to keep the Bears in every game, and has 111 carries for 630 yards and eight touchdowns.

What started as a promising season has quickly turned around on the G-Bears that have dropped three of their last four after opening the season with back-to-back wins, outscoring their opponents 104-10. Since then they have been outscored 117- 89.

Arizona State has lost some pretty close contests this season; I think they have a bit more offensive steam behind a very capable Threet.

Free Pick: Arizona State
