With a top 10 defense and the PAC-10’s leading passer, it’s no wonder the Wildcats are ranked No. 18 in the nation.

In fact, they could be in the top 10 if not for their complete meltdown in Week 5’s, 29-27 loss to Oregon State.

Quarterback Nick Foles has been the driving offensive force for the ‘Cats, but the defense will need to take it up a notch as Foles will be watching this weekend’s game from the sideline, nursing a knee injury suffered in Saturday’s 24-7 victory at Washington State.

The Arizona secondary will have its hands full trying to contain Huskies’ QB Jake Locker who threw for a career-best five touchdowns in last Saturday’s 35-34 double overtime win over then-No. 24 Oregon State. The Wildcats defense ranks 10th in the nation in total defense, at 284.3 yards per game, and seventh in scoring defense at 13.3 points a contest.

But it won’t be a picnic.

Locker has passed for 1,431 yards and 13 TDs this season, and despite a few momentary lapses of judgment that have resulted in just a pair of interceptions; he is still tops on my Heisman list.

Of course, he has gotten a lot of help from junior WR Jermaine Kearse who has already seized nine touchdown receptions after reaching just the midway point of the campaign. I like this kid and he sure has made some spectacular Lynn Swann-like catches.

Equally impressive is the Wildcats’ Juron Criner who has 33 receptions including three TDs and 551 yards. Although he didn’t play in the second half of Arizona’s game against Washington State due to an injury to his big toe, he had two receptions for 20 yards. He is expected to play in Saturday’s game.

With Foles out, the ‘Cats will bring in back up Matt Scott. The junior played just one game in 2009 and is known more for his running ability than his throwing. This will put some added pressure on the ‘Cats ground attack that has had its share of trouble trying to find its traction, until last week’s win over the Beavers.

Regardless, the Wildcats should still be able to move the ball against a Washington team that ranks 98th in the FBS in total defense, permitting an average of 416.8 yards.

The keys to this game will be how much success Arizona running backs Keola Antolin and Nic Grigsby can grind out, versus Locker’s ability to connect continuously with Kearse.

Without Foles, I would normally fold on the Wildcats, but with the strength of its defense and newly found running game, I think they win this one at home.
