No. 13 Virginia Tech vs. Pittsburgh Panthers Preview

This is a non-conference match up, but Pitt will join the ACC next season and will be in the Coastal Division along with Virginia Tech. NCAAF lines have Tech as a 10-point away favorite in this game with a total of 44.

In their last games Virginia Tech beat a weak Austin Peay team 42-7 while Pitt lost to Cincinnati 34-10.

This season Virginia Tech is 0-2 ATS with an O/U record of 0-1 and Pitt is also 0-2 with an O/U record of 0-1.

QB Logan Thomas leads Virginia Tech and he has 442 passing yards with 4 TD and 0 INT this season. He has a couple of great targets in WR’s Corey Fuller and Marcus Davis, who are each averaging over 14 yards per reception.

Where Tech has struggled is running the ball, as they do not have 1 RB that has over 100 rushing yards for the season. However, they may be able to run the ball in this game facing a Pitt team that gave up nearly 260 rushing yards in their loss to Cincinnati.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Pitt QB Tino Sunseri has passed for over 500 yards this season, but he only has 2 TD and has 1 INT. He has a decent WR corps, but the offensive line has been an issue.

For Pitt to pull off the upset they will need a good game from RB Ray Graham, who rushed for over 100 yards in the loss to Cincy and is averaging a solid 5.3 yards per carry on the season.

Tech has a solid defense ranked 22nd in the nation and while they are great defending the pass they did give up 192 rushing yards in their opening season OT win over Georgia Tech.

The last time these 2 teams met was back in 2003 when Pitt pulled off the upset beating the 5th ranked Hokies.

In some betting trends for this non-conference match up Virginia Tech is 0-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record, 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 5-0 in their last 5 non-conference games.

Pitt is 10-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.

Jason’s Pick: The trends do not point to it, but Virginia Tech will win this game and cover the spread, as they will play well on both sides of the ball.
