ACC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Virginia Tech Hokies

Coach: Frank Beamer
2009 Record: 10-3

Virginia Tech Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +2000

Coach Beamer has established his Hokies as one of the steadier programs in college football. A team annually built on a strong run game and aggressive defense always seems to be in the hunt for an ACC title. The Hokies churned out another double-digit win season in 2009; with the backfield of this year’s edition, we could see it yet again.

It won’t be a breeze – the ACC Coastal is a strong division and V-Tech has some tough non-conference opponents.

But if any team has proven continuity can win in this age of endless gimmicks, it’s the boys from Blacksburg, VA.

Team Strengths:

The Hokies backfield is one of the all-round strongest in the NCAA. Senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor has honed his passing skills and will be one of the league’s best in 2010. Hokies RB coach Billy Hite claims his backfield is the best he’s had in years; with players like Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones among Tech’s alums, this is high praise.

Darren Evans, who set the single-season frosh rushing record in 2008 (1,265 yards), went down with an injury last season and freshman Ryan Williams stepped in seamlessly, only smashing Evans’ ACC record and setting an ACC freshman TD mark with 22 total majors.

Williams will probably start this season, but Evans and senior Kenny Lewis will also get carries.

Defensively, CB Rashad Carmichael, who was fifth on the team in tackles and chipped in with an impressive six INTs, is back to anchor the secondary.

2009’s second-leading tackler, ILB Barquell Rivers, is also back to patrol the middle of the field.

Team Weaknesses:

Despite the routine athleticism on defense, it doesn’t change the fact that Tech loses eight of its top 13 tacklers from last year. The versatile Cody Grimm and athletic marvel Kam Chancellor will both be tough to replace. In total, the D only brings back four returning starters, though there is much depth in the ranks, especially in the front seven.

The Hokies also lose experience at guard and tackle on the offensive line, but sophomore Nick Becton, who should take over at left tackle, has good size and was highly-touted in high school from Wilmington, NC.

2010-2011 Virginia Tech Football Prediction: 11-2

The Hokies have some tough road games, squaring off against Boise State, North Carolina and Miami all away from home.

The top half of the Coastal division is strong and very evenly matched, so V-Tech should drop a couple games, but Beamer’s tried, tested and true formula of running the ball, pressure on defense and strong special teams will again put the Hokies near the top of the ACC.
