Virginia Tech Hokies 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (ACC) – Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies have won at least 10 games in eight consecutive seasons from 2004 through 2011, but has gone just 19-13 against FBS opponents over the last three seasons, and 7-6 in 2014. The Hokie defense remains among the best in the country, but finding some consistency on offense will be the key to a successful season.

The Hokies will have a difficult team reliving past glories, as the program played above its means for an extended stretch of time.

Head coach Frank Beamer is being given some time to try turning things around. It’s difficult to imagine he’d ever be on a short leash, but the fan base is beginning to get restless.

Team Strengths

Bud Foster’s defense is among the best in the land. The Hokies endured some turnover in 2014, yet remained at a high level. The pass rush is going to be fierce once again, thanks to some returning linemen, and the secondary will hold its own against any opponent.

Junior cornerback Kendall Fuller, who projects as a first-round draft choice next April, can do it all from the position. He’s great in coverage, can be physical when needed, and has great ball skills.

Senior defensive linemen Dadi Nicolas and Luther Maddy will key the defensive line. Nicolas elected to forego early entry into the 2015 NFL Draft, and Maddy was granted an additional year of eligibility.

Team Weaknesses

The offense has held the team back in recent years. Penalties and turnovers were a big problem a year ago. Offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler enters his third year with the program, and brings back returning quarterback Michael Brewer for his second year as the starter.

That group enters with questions along the offensive line once again, needing to replace three starters in an injury-plagued group, and there isn’t a whole lot of talent at the skill positions, either. Sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Ford had a good rookie campaign, and they’ll need a lot out of him this fall.

2015 Virginia Tech Hokies Prediction: 8-4

The season-opening date against Ohio State in Blacksburg presents an opportunity for the Hokies to get off to a great start to the season, but it seems more reasonable to expect a 1-1 start with a home date against Furman on deck.

The Buckeyes aren’t the only tough non-conference opponent on the schedule. Trips to Purdue and East Carolina won’t be cake walks. There’s a lot of travel for the team to endure after the first month of the season, also. There’s nearly a full calendar month from Oct. 24 to Nov. 21 without playing a home game.

The team still has its sights set on winning the Coastal Division, and that will make a Nov. 12 date at Georgia Tech particularly important. Having to go on the road to face the Yellow Jackets isn’t favorable, but the Hokies do get a week off to prepare for the Georgia Tech triple-option rushing attack.

If they still need that elusive sixth win in the regular-season finale, getting it against Virginia on Nov. 28 is practically money in the bank. The Hokies have won 11 in a row in the series, including a 24-20 victory this past season to become bowl eligible. The two sides will meet at Scott Stadium this season.
