Coach: Bill Stewart
2008 Record: 9-4

The loathed Rich Rodriguez, a WVU alum who build a strong program in Morgantown before jilting his home school for the Wolverines, made West Virginia a pipeline for fast, agile players.

Recently-graduated QB Pat White set the bar for scrambling pivots and the explosiveness can still be found on the roster. However, WVU draws a tough conference line-up and despite being talented, its usual level of success is by no means guaranteed.

Senior quarterback Jarrett Brown finally gets his shot at starting with White’s departure. He has a dangerous wideout in the diminutive Jock Sanders, but perhaps his most potent weapon is behind him in the backfield. Running back Noel Devine is absolutely electric and if he can find holes and escape injury, he’ll be among the elite. Tackle Scooter Berry and linebacker Reed Williams will make the headlines on D.

Team Strengths
Devine-Sanders is a scary duo of impact players. The team also has 6″8, 230 lb WR Wes Lyons to create match-up problems.

The mountain men have plenty of wisdom in the defensive backfield and Berry, paired with fellow DT Chris Neild, should be a terror.

Team Weaknesses
West Virginia must replace a lot of talent and game-savvy on the offensive line. Right tackle Selvish Capers returns, but everyone else is new. The linebacker corps has some ‘Jarrett Brown Syndrome’ where two seniors, Zac Cooper and Franchot Allen, finally get their crack. There are new faces on special teams.

The Mountaineers and their boisterous fans enjoyed a Sugar Bowl trip in 2005 and a Fiesta Bowl visit on ’07. They squeaked out a fabled Meineke Car Care Bowl victory (please detect my sarcasm) last season. The swift spread attack shouldn’t be any less effective this time around, but WVU draws a very tough end of season. At USF, Louisville, at Cincy, Pitt, and at Rutgers.

Hence, West Virginia should be down a notch or two in the Big East this season.

2009 Virginia Mountaineers Record Prediction: 8-5

The Big East should come down to either West Virginia or Pitt. While either of these teams can win, I think that Pitt has a bit more talent this season. It will all come down to that game against Pitt.
