Utah Utes 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (Pac-12) – Utes

For the Utah Utes, 2014 was a statement season. No, they didn’t challenge for the Pac-12 title or even the Pac-12 South Division title. They did, however, finally show that after 2 seasons as a doormat in the conference that they could win some games in the always difficult Pac-12.

They’ve been out to prove they belong in a major conference after leaving the Mountain West and they finally made their stand. The question now is whether or not they can do it again during the 2015 NCAA Football Season…

Even after a turbulent offseason that saw more changes at the coordinator jobs and the loss of a major defensive piece, Utah has worked to improve upon the pieces they have returning to the team this season.

There is a lot to look forward to this season for the Utes as they try to knock their “average” label off and turn themselves into actual contenders in their new conference.

Let’s break down the team’s strengths and weaknesses in 2015.

Team Strengths

Last season, Nate Orchard was a sack master. His loss stings, but it does not hurt because the team is loaded up on pass rushers. Hunter Dimik, Jason Fanaika and Lowell Lotulelei are all back and combined for 19 sacks last season. With that year under their belts, those numbers should improve this season.

Also back are the entire RB and LB groups. After finding an identity on the ground last season, Utah is well stocked with able bodied ball carriers and hard hitters. Also returning is starting QB Travis Wilson and his most popular target from last season, WR Kenneth Scott.

With all these position groups returning their top players, the Utes have a big advantage going into their 2015 campaign.

Team Weaknesses

Yes, Travis Wilson is back, but that also means so are his health issues. With the run game picking up last year, Wilson got somewhat of a second wind and some protection. It should remain the same this season, but with the issues he’s had in the past, people are going to cringe every time there is even a close call with the signal caller.

To go hand in hand with that is the loss of the left side of the offensive line. As usual, there are guys ready to step up, but can they keep Wilson upright and healthy?

Also needing attention is the loss of secondary starters. The team’s starting free safety and cornerback both moved on this offseason, leaving a couple of glaring holes. Now while there are a few guys vying for those positions with some starting experience, replacing a guy like Eric Rowe is going to be hard. And teams will likely test the new guy right off the bat.

2015-16 Utah Utes Prediction: 7-5

It’s hard to root against a program like Utah’s. After trying to prove its worth as a mid-major, it made the move to a Power 5 conference and got punished for it.

After finally adjusting, the Utes are beating some pretty good teams. The problem is, they also stumbled against some lesser competition.

If they can avoid losing just a couple of their close games, this prediction could be boosted by a couple more games very easily. Given the holes the team has and the competition they’ll be facing, it will be hard for Utah to find themselves nearing a 10 win season again.
