Coach: Rick Neuheisel
2008 Record: 4-8

Under former head coach Karl Dorrell, the Bruins were renown for topsy-turvy performances; losing when favored while upsetting Top 25 teams.

The Trojans’ cross-town rival has also been devastated with injuries (most notably at QB) the past couple seasons. In ’09, UCLA looks to translate more experience, more consistency and better luck into a much improved season.

At one point in 2006, UCLA was forced to choose between a fourth-string walk-on quarterback and a converted wideout for the QB position. This season Neuheisel and coveted offensive coordinator Norm Chow hope redshirt frosh Kevin Prince can hold up and upgrade the ghastly 9-21 TD to INT ratio from last year.Terrence Austin, productive soph Taylor Embree and TEs Ryan Moya and Logan Paulsen highlight the receiving targets returning for Prince.

The O-line will be bolstered by pudgy Colorado transfer Kai Maiava at center. The defense should make heads turn (literally and figuratively) with chunks of talent at every positional unit.

However, they’ll likely miss stud coordinator DeWayne Walker (who was interim head coach at one point) who left to coach New Mexico State.

Team Strengths
As mentioned, impact players are smattered throughout the D. First-team Pac-10 defensive tackle Brian Price and sack leader Korey Bosworth both return on the line; Reggie Carter and Akeem Ayers stand out at linebacker; speedy safety Rahim Moore and NCAA pass deflections leader Alterraun Verner hold up the secondary.

The special teams are in very good stead with Lou Groza candidate Kai Forbath and hang-time junkie Jeff Locke at punter.

Team Weaknesses
This team needs to prove the offense can produce consistently. There is a more experienced offensive line and veteran targets, but Chow must make the pieces jell. There needs to be fewer interceptions thrown and more production from the ground game.

We’ll see if 230 lb soph Derrick Coleman is up to the task.

UCLA is on the back end of the three teams from California at the top of the conference, but they should be up there nonetheless. The defense will be the trump card and if the offense can be at least competent, they’ll be competitive in Westwood. The Bruins get Cal at home but play a couple tough games at Neyland Stadium vs. Tennessee and at USC.

But when the smoke clears, UCLA will be a profoundly improved squad in ’09.

2009 UCLA Bruins Record Prediction: 8-4
