Tulane Green Wave 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (AAC) – Green Wave

Though they reside in a very fertile recruiting ground down in Louisiana, it has been a long time since Tulane was nationally relevant. It may seem hard to believe today, but there was a time they were actually in the SEC.

Head Coach:  Curtis Johnson
2014 Record:  3-9
Odds to win AAC:  +5000
Win Total:  4.5

Most of us know them more as a Conference USA member where they climbed all the way to seventh in the nation in 1998 thanks to a perfect 12-0 season led by Tommy Bowden.

They joined the American as part of its formation a year ago and have an uphill climb if they want to be relevant as part of this new group.Even though they are coming off a subpar season, there is good cause for optimism, as the Green Wave were a very young team a year ago.

If you subscribe to the theory that the most growth occurs between freshman and sophomore seasons, Tulane could see an offense that is much more respectable this year.

The defense is likely still the better unit, but the gap is narrowing. The AAC is far from loaded, so even incremental improvement could have a significant impact on wins and losses this season.

Team Strengths

Tulane has some skills players, and they are all young — so maybe the best is yet to come.

QB Tanner Lee has talent but was inconsistent last season. He got his feet wet and is lucky to not have to do it all himself thanks to the likes of RB Sherman Badie, who is explosive, and a nice stable of backs.

On defense, they were able to create a lot of turnovers last season. Those things tend to balance out over time, but the defense will be helped by the return of All AAC Parry Nickerson.

LB Nico Marley is only 200 pounds but he is probably the best player on the team. He gets into the backfield once or twice a game and makes plays.

Team Weaknesses

This team can’t have a lot of confidence after last year. They took their lumps as frosh, but there is no guarantee that Lee takes that next step they need to becoming more consistent and reliable.

So many three-and-outs wear on a team, and they have to have more success on third down.

On defense they are undersized. That hurts them big time when they play the likes of opponents from the ACC, but it will also hurt when Army and Navy are waiting for them on the road with their ground heavy option attacks.

Building towards a fast finish is hard and you wonder if they will be able to keep up their spirits for winnable games in November.

2015-16 Tulane Green Wave Prediction: 3-9

I think the Green Wave are likely to be improved, but the jump in the win column will come next year when their sophomore group are upperclassmen. They take on a couple of ACC teams in the non-conference, and I think it will be clear they are not quite ready to put a scare in a Power 5 opponent, yet.

Once they get into conference play, it is going to be really challenging early. Sorry, Green Wave fans, but I don’t see them winning any of their first five AAC tilts.

If they can stay strong mentally they could run the table in November, but that might be a little too much to ask. Either way, I think there can be some nice buying opportunities late in the schedule, especially hosting Connecticut after what might be a less than flattering loss to Memphis the week before.

File that one away for later.
