Sun Belt Conference Football Previews: Troy

Head Coach: Larry Blakeney
2009 Record: 9-4

Troy Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +90000

The Troy Trojans have dominated the Sun Belt Conference in the last two years, but they lost more starters than any other team in the conference. Larry Blakeney’s squad is still one of the most talented in the league, but can they win a third straight without some of their key contributors from the last couple years?

Levi Brown is now gone, which means Troy will have Jamie Hampton leading the offense. Hampton has been efficient in the playing time he has seen, but he will take on a much larger role this year. The defense lost a ton of talent and there are some real concerns on that side of the football.

No doubt this team will be one of the better teams in the Sun Belt, but there are questions as to whether they will still be the best.

Team Strengths:

Jerrel Jernigan is the best receiver in the Sun Belt, and he has plenty of help on the outside as well. Josh Jarboe is expected to burst onto the scene this year and be a big play maker for the Trojans. Hampton will definitely have a solid set of receivers.

The backfield also appears to be an area of strength for Troy in 2010. DeJuan Harris and Shawn Southward will both be consistent runners and a real threat to catch the football out of the backfield as well.

Troy’s cornerbacks are probably the best in the Sun Belt. Bryan Willis is young, but he has the tools to be one of the better cover corners in the country. Barry Valcin is solid as well, and the Troy secondary should be improved from 2009.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line has generally been a huge area of strength for Troy, but it doesn’t look like it will be in 2010. There is certainly no DeMarcus Ware in this group, and they are very inexperienced. All four of the defensive linemen are new, which could be a real problem.

The linebackers will also be inexperienced, with only Daniel Sheffield back as a starter. The loss of Bear Woods is a big one for this defense, since he was their emotional leader as well.

The offensive line returns a decent amount of talent, but the loss of Danny Franks at the center spot could slow them down a bit.

Troy 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 9-4

I think the Troy Trojans will be very strong on offense in 2010, but the defense could be a bit of a problem. Blakeney has built a real winning tradition at Troy, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they get to nine wins this year. I think this team has a little less overall talent than Middle Tennessee State.

On Tuesday October 5th the Sun Belt game of the year will take place when Troy travels to take on Middle Tennessee State.

I think the Trojans probably lose that game, but win most of the rest.
