Week 9:   College Football Line Preview

A couple of undefeated teams will be tested as Michigan State and Missouri are on the road against conference rivals.  Both games have the undefeated team as the underdog which is pretty rare for this time of year. Their are also some important conference bragging rights games at USC and Georgia which are of great interest but if they go according to plan won’t really impact the BCS race.

If they don’t and USC upsets Oregon than the chances of the Spartans or Tigers playing for the whole enchilada get that much better.

Who needs a playoff to kill all this weekly intrigue?

Florida State @ NC State (+4) A pretty good game for us all on Thursday night.  Florida State is rolling and they should continue but their has been some success playing underdogs in these nationally televised midweek contests.  NC State can get into the ACC Coastal race with a victory but it would be a killer for ACC in general.  I would bet FSU early here.

Michigan State @ Iowa (-6.5) It was a surprise to see Iowa lose to Wisconsin last week but things can get very interesting in the Big Ten if they bounce back with a victory on Saturday.  The Spartans awoke in time to keep their dream season alive last week but Iowa will be the stiffest test yet.  I really like the Spartans here in a close game to cover…they just might win it.

California @ Oregon State (-3) The Beavers have won the last three in the series and are a tough out at home.  Given the way that Cal plays on the road I was surprised the spread is so short here, especially given that the Beavers will have had two weeks to prepare.  I will be on Oregon State and early as I think it will rise.

Florida @ Georgia (-3) No matter which team is up or down these teams just don’t like each other – which is why it is surprising that the game is referred to as the World’s Largest Cocktail Party (oops).  The Bulldogs have the momentum but the Gators have had the extra week to prepare.  Nobody needed it as much as they do.  This one will be an interesting one to watch.

Missouri @ Nebraska (-7.5) It doesn’t get any easier for Mizzou this week after surprising Oklahoma.  Nebraska can reclaim leadership in the division with a win but the Tigers should be pumped knowing that if they can win this one they just might go all the way.  They also beat Nebraska at NU two year sago but that was with Chase Daniel at the helm.  Does Blaine Gabbert have another ace game up his sleeve?

East Carolina @ Central Florida (-7.5) This is an important contest in Conference USA.  Both teams are undefeated in conference play and playing well.  ECU has won last 4 including the past two visits to UCF.  This is a great contrast in styles as ECU will try to challenge one of the stingiest defenses in America.  I can’t get behin UCF unless the spread drops towards game time.

Baylor @ Texas (-7.5) How low can Texas go and how high can Baylor fly?  I read that the Longhorns hadn’t lost consecutive home games since the 90’s so how will they respond to all the negativity surrounding them right now.  Meanwhile Baylor is looking to continue a season which already had them qualified for a bowl and ranked in the BCS standings.  Is it Halloween around the corner of April Fools?

Utah @ Air Force (+7) The Utes have been laying waste to their opponents but this is the last game before TCU and the most difficult road game left on the schedule.  They never seem to overlook opponents so a focused effort can be expected.  The Utes have won the last two and the last three at Air Force but the Falcons always give a great effort against Utah.  I would expect nothing less here so you might want to grab AF if it rises a above a TD.

Oregon @ USC (+7) If Oregon is truly BCS calibre than this shouldn’t be a game right?  The Ducks have been running roughshod over everybody and smacked the Trojans last year on their home turf…but they haven’t been USC in LA since 2000.  I think this can be an epic battle and is the one game the Trojans have circled on their schedule this season.  They will let it all hang out against the Ducks.  I hope the public bets up Oregon as I will be backing the Trojans who are only 3 points from being perfect this year.
