Week 11:   College Football Line Preview

No single game stands out this week the way TCU-Utah did last week.  They way that one went maybe that is a good thing if we want to see some games with drama at the end.

It will be interesting to see how Utah responds at Notre Dame off their humiliating home loss.  The Utes are a very good team and the Irish are not which is why I was so surprised that the spread was less than a TD.

As you will see below a lot of the games I chose this week feature home underdogs and I am about 50/50 in terms of who is the right side to back.

The season is ending pretty soon and there are some big games still to be plaid…but this week should be pretty quiet.

Oklahoma State vs Texas (+6) – The Cowboys looked unstoppable last week against Baylor but winning at Texas is a whole other thing.  Baylor may be better than Texas this season but they have just owned Oklahoma State.  OSU has only one win over the Longhorns since the creation of the Big 12 and that was in ‘97.

Miami vs Georgia Tech (+3) – Is anybody interested in what the Hurricanes are doing these days?  They barely beat Maryland last week while Georgia Tech played tough against the Hokies.  GT should win this one straight up with a couple of days of extra rest.  You have to fade the Canes without Harris.

Iowa vs Northwestern (+12) – This is a bigger spread than what I normally profile but I like giving Northwestern the pub.  NW may have lost to Penn State last week but it should be noted they beat Iowa last year holding them scoreless the last three quarters of the game.  NW may not upset them again but I like the 12 points and I think it might continue to rise.

Utah vs Notre Dame (+5.5) – I never would have expected Utah to lose like they did last week.  But I also never would have expected that they wouldn’t be double digit favourites against ND either.  Sure it can be tough to get up after a crushing loss but ND has lost two in a row and is without their starting QB against a Top 10 team.  I would pound this one now as it can only go up.

Georgia vs Auburn (-8.5) – The Tigers only have a few obstacles left but Georgia shouldn’t be overlooked.  Sure they have been down but they have won 4 of 5 and still have a plethora of NFL talent on the roster. They have also won 4 in a row against Auburn which they call the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.  I like Auburn to win but I would let the line come down a bit before placing my bet.

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina (+5.5)  – In some ways the Tar Heels are the most “what if “ team in the country.  They have won 6 of their last seven including last week’s upset of FSU despite huge personnel losses.  They have also become one of the better passing teams around as QB TJ Yates has really improved.  At home against the Hokies who they beat last year I feel comfortable backing them.

Texas A&M vs Baylor (+3) – Two teams coming from vastly difference circumstances.  Baylor lost badly on the road while A&M won impressively at home.  Now the roles are reversed and I think the result will be two.  This line is too much a result of the recency effect unless there is an injury I don’t know about.

South Carolina vs Florida (-6.5) – This is a real gut check game for South Carolina.  Have they really elevated themselves or are they the same ol SC.  Judging by the spread it looks like the latter but I think that might be wrong.  I am hoping that the public bids up the Gators so I can swoop in the on the ‘Cocks on game day.

USC vs Arizona (-5.5) – The Wildcats beat the Trojans for the first time in a long time last season.  Twice in a row might be a bit much for a team that was just whacked by the Cardinal last weekend.  The Trojans are proving to have one of the best offenses in the land.  Unfortunately it is paired with an uncharacteristically bad defense.  This will be one where the team that wants it most should win and it should be tight.  Take the points as a cushion.
