Coach: Lane Kiffin
2008 Record: 5-7

Phil Fulmer, Tennessee’s coach of 17 seasons, was let go last year after another sub-par season for the rabid fans and boosters in Knoxville.

Fulmer had the best winning percentage out of any coach with 10+ years of service (76.6%). In comes Lane Kiffin, a youngster who knows how to ruffle feathers and piss on bee’s nests. However, he’s shown he’ll be a factor with a fantastic recruiting class (two top 10 freshman tailbacks) and some strong returning talent. It could be an interesting year in Neyland Stadium.

Safety Eric Berry is just money. Money in the bank. Legal tender deposited in your financial instit….you get the idea. A first-team All-American in ’08, Berry had 72 tackles, three sacks and seven INTs. He also broke the conference’s career INT return yardage record. He is part of a defense with a couple of impact players at different positions. Offensively, the Vols were nothing to write home about last season.

They should be improved in QB Jonathan Crompton’s senior season; expect a big contribution out of top freshman RB Bryce Brown.

Team Strengths
Berry obviously tops the list, but in addition to him LB Rico McCoy and corner Dennis Rogan are dynamic vets. McCoy was the team’s second-leading tackler last year. Senior Dan Williams is huge (6″3, 327 lbs) on the nose and we’ll see if junior end Ben Martin, a former top recruit, wakes up.

Austin Rogers brings veteran savvy to the wideout corps, and there are some grizzly, strong members on the offensive line.

Team Weaknesses
Thus far, Crompton hasn’t made any Tennessee fan forget about Peyton Manning. Junior Nick Stephens also saw time under center, and neither of them accomplished much statistically or in the win column. The Vols will need considerable improvement from their field general to have any chance of remaining competitive in the division.

Also, the team is expecting freshman contributions from some important positions (MLB, FS, RB) which can be a wild card.

The university meant business and did not waste any time in hiring Kiffin, defensive guru Monte Kiffin’s son and the former Oakland Raiders coach. There are routinely 100,000+ nutty fans in Neyland Stadium demanding better football to be played in Knoxville.

With games at Florida, Alabama and Ole Miss, don’t expect miracles out of Kiffin and the Vols, but they have legitimate talent and should be vastly better than 2008’s paltry 5-7 mark.

2009 Tennessee Volunteers Record Prediction: 8-5

I’m still not sure who is more of a whack job, Al Davis or Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin now needs to back up all his talk with some big wins, but I don’t think he gets them this season. Maybe a 7-8 win season, but thats it
