2011 All State Sugar Bowl

(6) Ohio State @ (8) Arkansas
Tuesday, January 4, 2011, 8:30 p.m. ET
Superdome, New Orleans LA

The Sugar Bowl is one of the oldest bowl games, as it has been played every year since 1935. Along with the Orange Bowl and Sun Bowl the Sugar Bowl is the 2nd oldest bowl game only trailing the historic Rose Bowl. The Sugar Bowl is a BCS bowl game and it hosted the BCS title game in both 2000 and 2004.

The Sugar Bowl plays host to the champion of the SEC unless a team from that conference is chosen to play in the BCS title game. Even though a team from the SEC has played in the National Championship game every season since 2006, and this year as well with Auburn, a team from the conference has played in the Sugar Bowl every season since 2001. This season Arkansas got the nod from the SEC and Ohio State, which won a share of the Big 10 title, got the nod as the at large bid.

The idea of the Sugar Bowl was first though of in 1927 by Colonel James M. Thomson publisher of the New Orleans Item and in 1935 his thought came to fruition with the first Sugar played. From 1935 to 1975 the Sugar Bowl was held at Tulane Stadium and from 1976 to the present in the Superdome.

Alabama and LSU are tied with the most Sugar Bowl appearances with 13 apiece. The Crimson Tide have fared better in the game with an 8-5 all time record while LSU is at 6-7. Arkansas will be playing in their 6th Sugar Bowl this season and they are hoping that they will fare better than the past, as they have a 1-4 Sugar Bowl record.

Current NFL players with Sugar Bowl MVP honors to their names include Tim Tebow (2010), Steve Slaton (2006), and Jason Campbell (2005). Some other Sugar Bowl MVP’s that went on to have great NFL careers include Bobby Layne (1948), Ken Stabler (1967), Archie Manning (1970), Herschel Walker (1981), Dan Marino (1982), Bo Jackson (1984), and Jerome Bettis (1992).

RECENT RESULTS

2006: West Virginia 38, Georgia 35

This game was played in Atlanta because of the damage caused to the Superdome because of Hurricane Katrina. WVU was a double-digit underdog to the Bulldogs. With only 1:26 left in the game and WVU clinging to a 38-35 lead it looked as if Georgia would get another chance with the Mountaineers facing a 4th and 6. They made a gutsy call and on a fake punt picked up a 1st down to seal the win. WVU Steve Slaton got the MVP rushing for a Sugar Bowl record 204 yards with 3 TD. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

2007: LSU 41, Notre Dame 14

The 2007 Sugar Bowl was Notre Dame’s 9th straight bowl loss and even though they tied the game 14-14 with only 2:25 left in the 2nd quarter LSU went on to score 27 unanswered points to win in a blowout. LSU QB JaMarcus Russell took home the MVP honors.

2008: Georgia Bulldogs 41, Hawaii Warriors 10

Hawaii came into the game undefeated and may have been a little miffed they get not get a title shot. Georgia got the nod in the game because LSU was playing in the BCS title game. The game showed that the Warriors were out-matched by a school from a big conference, as the contest was never close. The Bulldogs had a 41-3 lead before Hawaii scored their first TD. While Georgia featured 2 future 1st round NFL draft picks it was DE Marcus Howard, who won the MVP.

2009: Utah Utes 31, Alabama Crimson Tide 17

Utah ended their perfect season with a 14 win over Alabama, who were 10-point favorites in the game. The Utes jumped out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter, but Alabama came back to make the score 21-10 on a Javier Arenas 73–yard punt return and a short passing TD to make it 21-17 early in the 3rd quarter. Utah scored 10 more points in the game and their D was awesome in the 4th quarter holding the Tide scoreless. QB Brian Johnson won the MVP. Utah finished as the only undefeated team that college season, but still did not win the National Championship.

2010: Florida Gators 51, Cincinnati 24

In Tim Tebow’s last game he won the MVP in a blowout win and broke 2 BCS records for most passing yards (482) and total yards (533). The Gators led 30-3 at halftime and 44-10 heading into the 4th quarter in a game that was never close.
