Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Stanford Cardinal

Coach: Jim Harbaugh
2009 Record: 8-5

Stanford Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Jim Harbaugh has quickly turned this program into a football team no longer the also-ran of the Pac-10 conference. The 2010 edition of the Cardinal blends a spirited coach with a balanced roster and a sophomore quarterback who is the next great QB prospect for the NFL in Andrew Luck.

Given USC’s recent troubles and a surprising amount of Pac-10 parity, there’s nothing stopping Stanford from being in the thick of the conference race.

At Stanford, there are a lot of prized brain cells under those helmets, but in 2010 this school can be known for something other than brain-iacs and Tiger Woods – the Cardinal presents a very respectable showcase on the gridiron.

Team Strengths:

Luck gives Stanford a premier pro-style QB to build around for the next season or two. He distributes the ball to a couple major players at wide-out in senior Ryan Whalen and junior Chris Owusu. Luck has another excellent weapon in TE Konrad Reuland, a former Charlie Weis recruit at Notre Dame. Senior center Chase Beeler anchors the offensive line.

Defensively, Palo Alto sees a stud linebacker in junior Thomas Keiser; the pass-rush specialist racked up nine sacks last season.

Another intriguing ’backer is senior Owen Marecic, who sees time both ways when he lines up at fullback. Junior SS Delano Howell is also a beauty.

Team Weaknesses:

The running game loses last year’s workhorse (and Heisman candidate) Toby Gerhart, which is obviously devastating for offensive balance. Stocky sophomore Stepfan Taylor steps in, but he won’t have close to the production of Gerhart.

Elsewhere, Stanford is fortunate to have many returning starters on both sides of the ball, though the talent and depth still is not on par with an Oregon or a Southern Cal.

2010-2011 Stanford Football Prediction: 9-4

Pac-10 teams can beat up on each other at any given time, as Stanford might experience with road games at UCLA, Oregon and California. However, this team has some serious players throughout and a quarterback gem in Luck. A double-digit win season isn’t out of the realm of possibility, though the Cardinal will probably lose a game or two they shouldn’t.

At the very least, this program is scores better under Harbaugh recently.
