SMU Mustangs 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Picks

2015-2016 Football Preview (AAC) – Mustangs

Other than new member Navy there is probably not a program as rich in football history as the SMU Mustangs. It may be a long time ago but the Mustangs used have players like Eric Dickerson and Craig Jameson campus in the days of the Pony Express. Sure it led to the death penalty but it was also one hell of a ride.

AAC 2015-2016 College Football Preview – SMU

Head Coach:  Chad Morris
2014 Record:  1-11
Odds to win AAC:  +10000
Win Total:  2.5

They have had only snippets of success before hitting rock bottom last season but optimism is high right now. It might not be justified given the state of the program but it is better than feeling the other way.

The optimism is based on new head coach Chad Morris, who proved as the offensive coordinator at Clemson that the schemes he used in Texas as a high school coach can also work in college football. Now at Clemson he was blessed with a high level of talent, something he does not have at SMU.

At least not yet.

The hope is that with all of his local high school connections he might start bringing in the right talent and work some magic like they are seeing at TCU and Baylor right now. It seems like a bit of a stretch but they should start improving within the AAC.

Team Strengths

There is absolute nobody questioning that Morris was a good hire for this program, but he will not be able to fully implement his system for a couple of seasons – the players just aren’t there.

It looks like Matt Davis will get the nod at quarterback, but his best skill is still running the ball. Mobility is good for Morris’ system, but you need to have the threat of the pass too.

One thing the Mustangs do have is a deep threat in the form of 6-4 redshirt frosh WR Courtland Sutton. His big body means that Davis will not have to be as fine in ball placement which is a good thing.

SMU is definitely going to have to take some shots down the field this season and the strength of the team is the receiver group.

Team Weaknesses

This club may not really have a strength, so this is all relative here. They definitely have to be a lot better on the offensive and defensive lines this season to have a chance. The offensive line couldn’t block last year and the defensive line wasn’t much better.

Improvement on either side to mere respectability would be considered a success. The key things for this group really is going to be proving to themselves that they are better in November than when the season began. Not getting too down after what should be some very lopsided early losses will be key.

SMU Mustangs 2015-2016 Prediction:  2-10

The Mustangs might improve their win total from a year ago in the first season of Chad Morris’ tenure, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be much headway being made – these things take time.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

In the first three weeks of the season they play Baylor and TCU, and those could be among the biggest blowouts in FBS this season, especially when they are on the road to face the Horned Frogs. What could make this season respectable is the fact that in the AAC West there are other rebuilding programs like Tulsa and Tulane. Maybe Morris gets the SMU effort going a little quicker and they can sink those teams while they are down. Morris might have been the biggest hire any program made this offseason but that is not going to help us a ton in the betting markets.

I am not sure there are going to be too many situations where you are going to rely on what you can predict about SMU. Which is mostly going to mean you stay away from these guys.
