In the meantime, the Bulls will hope they can forget their opener against McNeese State.

The Bulls’ new head coach Willie Taggart got a shellacking from McNeese State in an embarrassing 53-21 loss to begin his inaugural campaign.

But in his defense, the final score does not really tell the whole story.

South Florida actually started the game pretty good, but it was not long before the Cowboys were up by 33-7, heading into the half after scoring 31 unanswered points in a terrible second quarter.

The Bulls did get off some decent plays though in the second half, but they were never able to recover, finishing the game with just 342 yards of offense, 209 of which came through the air.

If the team can’t get things together come Saturday, it’s may get ugly early on against a Spartans’ squad that stated their 2013 campaign with a  26-13 win over the Western Michigan Broncos over the weekend.

The Spartans should have no problem making things miserable for the Bulls’ offense, as its defense it has one of the top defenses in the Big Ten. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Making things worse will be MSU’s offense, which if they can get it started — is much improved from last season.

Led by quarterback Andrew Maxwell, the Spartans struggled to really turn things up against a much-lesser Broncos’ team last Saturday.

Maxwell never really showed up, as MSU was forced to rotate in backup Connor Cook to muster what little offense they could muster, which managed 297 yards, with just 116 coming through the air.

In fact, if it were not for the Spartans’ defense, which scored twice in the game, the game could have easily gone another way.

Matt’s free prediction:

Well, the way I see it, even though the Bulls were hammered in their opening game, they are a much team better than that.

South Florida definitely has some talent, especially offensively.

Meanwhile, the Spartans can’t expect their defense to continue to carry them.

Offensively MSU was miserable last week, and until they show they can outscore their own defense, I see them winning, but I don’t see them putting up enough to cover this spread.
