The Owls are coming off a disappointing 2012 season winning just three of 12 games overall while posting  a 2-6 record in its final season in the Sun Belt Conference.

This season doesn’t look to be any better, and opening on the road won’t help, as the Owls were horrible on the road with just one victory in seven games last year.

Meanwhile, Miami finished its 2012 campaign tied with North Carolina for the best record in the ACC Coastal Division going 7-5 overall.

The Canes’ finished 5-3, but still did not qualify for postseason play.

Currently, Miami are 33-point favorites in this one, and will aim to repeat last year’s 4-1 start with a shellacking of a much weaker Florida Atlantic squad, which had struggled on both sides of the ball last season.

The Owls’ passing game generated an average of 237.6 yards a game, and the ground game was even worse, ranking 110 in Division IA with just 112.3 yards a game.

That led to a dismal average of 20.5 points per game — ranking them107 in the nation.

The defense was not that much better, ranking 86 in the nation overall in points, giving up an average of 30.8 points a game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

That’s going to be a problem as the Owls make their Conference-USA debut facing a Hurricanes team that returns almost its entire offense from last season.

And even though Miami struggled with its rushing attack, it did pass well, ranking 25 in the country with an average of 295.4 yards a game.

Quarterback Stephen Morris, who passed for 3,345 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2012, will return, as does last year’s leading receiver Phillip Dorsett, who hauled in 58 receptions and averaged more than 14 yards a catch.

On the other side of the ball, the Canes’ will be equally loaded, as nine defensive starters return from last season.

And even though they had their share of highs and lows in 2012, this defense should have more than enough talent to contain the Owls in this one.

Matt’s free prediction:

Florida Atlantic is no match in this one. But, they have gone are 6-0 ATS in their last six road games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 nonconference games.

Still. Miami has gone 5-0 ATS in its last five home games making this one an easy one to predict.

Take the Hurricanes, without the spread and pocket some dough.
