Alabama is 17-1 SU in its last 18 games, while Virginia Tech is 4-10-1 ATS in its last 15 games.

The Tide are also coming off  their second consecutive national title, while the Hokies recently ended a disappointing seven-win season.

Along with quarterback A.J. McCarron, who is back for a chance at a third title and chance to shatter a few school records in the process, the Tide boasts an abundance of elite upperclassmen talent at several positions.

Meanwhile, Tech is dealing with injuries and quite possibly has one of the game’s biggest enigmas at quarterback in Logan Thomas.

Standing 6-foot-6, the 260-pound Thomas looks more like a linebacker than quarterback. However, his sheer size seems to be the only advantage for the Hokies in this one.

That’s because besides some question marks along its offensive line, Alabama is a team that is poised for another shot at a national title in 2013. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

McCarron is geared up to have another incredible season as he’ll throw the ball to top receive Amari Cooper, who had 1000 yards on 59 catches and 11 touchdowns last season.

He’ll also have the luxury of handing the ball off to T.J. Yeldon, Derrick Henry and a host of versatile backs should the Hokies find a way to impede the passing attack.

In the meantime, Alabama’s defense should not be too concerned about the Hokies offense, which will lean heavily on Thomas, who after predicted by many scouts to be the top quarterback in the nation in 2012, finished the year with a whopping 16 interceptions while completing just 51 percent of his passes.

Outside Thomas, Tech has little else offensively, and going up against one of the best group of linebackers in the country, probably means they won’t be able to find much running success in this one, especially David Wilson departed.

Matt’s free prediction:

Okay, we all know that games are not won and lost on paper, and they aren’t won or lost based on the number of championship trophies one team has and the other does not.

Games are won on the field, by those that want it more.

So can the Hokies knock off the nation’s No. 1 team?

Probably not.
