Those were just some of the amazing statistics compiled by the Boise State Broncos over the past decade and a half.

One of the most overachieving programs in the sport of college football had crafted a track record of pronounced success on its home turf, and with no more severe tests on the 2012 schedule, Boise State simply had to win one more home game – against TCU – to make a 12-0 regular season a reality, thereby punching a ticket for a BCS bowl game.

Instead, the Broncos made three spectacular mistakes in the final two and a half minutes of regulation to somehow lose hold of everything they held dear. A fumble with 2:26 left, precisely when the Broncos were about to seal a 35-28 win over TCU and gain a final first down, was the first huge blunder.

Then, after TCU scored a touchdown to make the score 35-34, the Horned Frogs went for the 2-point conversion and the lead. The 2-point pass to the right sideline should have been knocked down by the Boise State defender on the play, but instead of trying to knock the ball down, the defender tried to intercept the pass and whiffed, allowing TCU receiver Josh Boyce to come up with the pigskin for the conversion and a 36-35 lead. Then, after driving to the TCU 20 on the final drive of the game, Boise State kicker Dan Goodale missed badly on a 38-yard game-winning field goal.

Three errors in the heat of crunch time led to a stomach-punch 36-35 loss and the ruination of a season, including the loss of the Mountain West Conference championship to the TCU crew that has been a thorn in Boise’s side over the past four years. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore is 46-3 in his career; two of those three losses came against TCU, both by one point.

Now, Boise State will try to pick itself off the mat against San Diego State. The only question is if the Broncos will be too heartbroken to play. If they perform with passion, they should run San Diego State out of the building. If they sulk and mope, San Diego State has enough talent to pull off the upset. The sense here is that Boise State will regroup. It wants to finish this season 11-1. Take the Broncos.

Pick: Boise State
