Gambling Matchup Week 11 – Maryland Terrapins vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

After gutting out an ugly 24-17 win last week at Wake Forest, Notre Dame travels to FedEx Field to take on Maryland. The Irish shut out the Demon Deacons in the second half last week to claim the win and move to 6-3 on the season.

Venue/Stadium: FedEx Field – Landover, Maryland (Neutral Site)

Moneyline: Notre Dame -1100
Spread (ATS): Notre Dame -20
Over/Under: 56.5

While technically a neutral site game, FedEx Field is a mere 20 minutes away from the University of Maryland campus.

The Terrapins fired then-coach Ralph Friedgen at the end of last season essentially because new blood was needed to take the Terps to the next level. So far, the plan hasn’t worked, as the Randy Edsall-led Terrapins are 2-7 this season. Competitive at times and abysmal at others, Maryland hasn’t seemed to be particularly good at any one thing as it has dropped five straight.

Danny O’Brien and C.J. Brown continue to split time at quarterback, O’Brien the better passer (56 percent pass completion) and Brown the better runner (7.4 yards per carry).

Both throw too many interceptions, however: Their combined touchdown-to-interception ratio is 11 to 13.

Notre Dame’s offense has really only been stopped by itself by committing turnovers. With Tommy Rees throwing for 258 yards per game and Michael Floyd one of the best receivers in the country, the Irish become an offensive power when Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray get going. The two running backs combined for 157 yards per game in the last two outings. The Irish defense, led by Manti T’eo at linebacker, contains opposing offenses reasonably well and allows just 21 points per game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

In assessing this matchup, one wonders which Maryland team will show up. Will the Terrapins become the team that knocked off Miami and nearly upset Georgia Tech, Clemson, and West Virginia, or will this be the team that folded like a flour tortilla against Temple and similarly shriveled in a shocking home-field loss against lowly Boston College, a team that wasn’t expected to win a single ACC game this season?

Maryland sometimes plays an inspired brand of ball, but on other days, the Terps are plainly body-snatched; they lack the consistency and dependability of a team that’s ready to compete on a big neutral-site stage. Notre Dame won’t be fazed by this environment.

The Irish own an appreciable amount of skill-position talent, and it should emerge against an ACC foe that simply should not be trusted.

Take the Fighting Irish on Saturday night – this game won’t be close.

Pick: Notre Dame
