The Pac-10 is probably the strangest major conference to handicap in college football this season for two reasons. For one, we’ll see an influx of new teams starting next year, so the conference will be harder to win from that point on.

Also, the team I fully expect to finish first won’t actually qualify for a bowl game and isn’t even available to bet on at the sportsbook.

I’ll explain more below with my predicted breakdown.

PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE

1. USC
2. Oregon
3. Washington
4. Arizona
5. Oregon State
6. Stanford
7. UCLA
8. California
9. Arizona State
10. Washington State

I fully expect USC to win the conference but that’s as far as the Trojans are allowed to go this season. Because of their recruiting violations, they’re banned from postseason play for two years. It’s too bad, as the Trojans look pretty good for 2010.

They have the top scoring defense in the nation and their entire front seven returns to terrorize the Pac-10.

Oregon has suspension problems of its own with Jeremiah Masoli forced sit out the entire season.

But the Ducks still have good alternatives ad quarterback and they’ll protect whoever gets the job (probably Nate Costa) very well with their entire O-line back.

Washington is picking up major steam because of its star power. Is Jake Locker the next great NFL prospect to join the hype machine? Most pundits think so. Washington can also change the pace with Chris Polk in the backfield; he topped 1,100 yards last year.

Nine starters return to Washington’s offense but it’s worth noting that the only two holes to fill are both in the offensive line.

Arizona could be the conference’s top sleeper. Nick Foles is a solid option at quarterback and Nate Grigsby is another weapon that should make the Wildcats’ offense above average. Their pass rush is also strong, led by Rick Elmore and Brooks Reed.

The Rodgers brothers – Jacquizz at tailback and James at wideout – really put Oregon State on the map. But can Ryan Katz do a good enough job getting them the ball?

Their “D” also lacks depth.

PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Washington 30, Oregon 27 (USC ineligible)

USC had the top scoring defense in the pac-10 (18th in nation). How’s the betting line on the pac-10 championship game? I’ll bet nobody wins

A couple of things. There is no Pac -10 championship game. Second, you’re also wrong about there being two holes to fill on the offensive line for the Huskies, there is only one hole. They return 4 starters, losing only Ben Ossai. Their other offensive starter they lost was Paul Homer, the fullback.

It’s a hypathetical game prediction….if there were a PAC 10 championship game…that’s what the score would be. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Thanks for pointing out the O-line fact, we’ll look into that.

Ok, I see. I like the prediction if there was a championship game. We need to beat them one of these years. It’s been kind of a one sided rivalry as of late.

Also, I hope I wasn’t coming across as a jerk.

Hypothetical.

Is this a handicapping site or a high school newspaper sports column? While you’re at it, perhaps you could waste time by predicting the scores of the following games for me:

Washington v. Texas (I know it’s not scheduled, but I’m still curious how it will turn out)

1991 Washington v. 2009 Oregon (Why limit ourselves to present-day team?)

1991 Washington v. 2009 Seahawks (For that matter, I think we should start comparing pro and college teams)

1991 Washington v. 2010 Tampa Bay Devil Rays (I know, I know…different sports. But it’s hypothetical right? To make things fair, let’s make it a hockey game)

Utter hogwash.
