Ole Miss Rebels 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds and Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (SEC) – Ole Miss

Describing the 2014 season Ole Miss just put together is tricky. The season was a success in some ways and a disappointment in others. Considering how difficult the SEC West wound up being, getting to nine wins is a heck of an accomplishment, but the Rebels certainly placed their sights higher after pulling down those goal posts after upsetting Alabama in Oxford.

Head Coach: Hugh Freeze
2014 Record: 9-4
Ole Miss Odds to win the SEC: 8-1

Ole Miss was the only team to beat Alabama before the College Football Playoff, beat a Boise State team that went on to win the Fiesta Bowl, and picked up a big victory in the Egg Bowl with a victory over rival Mississippi State. However, back-to-back losses against LSU and Auburn – during which standout wide receiver Laquon Treadwell was lost for the season after breaking his leg – left a sour taste in the mouths of Rebels fans in a season filled with positives.

Any notion that the team would be able to go out on a high note after eliminating Mississippi State’s shot at a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff was squashed when the team got trounced 42-3 by TCU in its bowl game. The majority of the key faces from an elite 2013 recruiting class are still in town, but this could be their last shot at glory.

Team Strengths

A run defense that was so good a year ago could be even better this season. Robert Nkemdiche has already established himself as one of the top defensive linemen in the country, and with Isaac Gross and Woodrow Hamilton manning the interior, that defensive line is going to be a brick wall.

The Rebel defense finished first in the nation in scoring defense during the 2014 regular season. Nkemdiche is the guy who will anchor that group once again. After coming to Oxford as the No. 1 recruit in 2013, he’s lived up to the hype. Keeping him on the field will be key this season.

Team Weaknesses

The team’s offense was good last season, but there was no consistency there, and there were too many turnovers. Bo Wallace is gone, and the offensive line and skill position players are in place for this team to be solid. The team completed fewer than 50 percent of its passes in five of its final seven games. Fifteen of the team’s 25 giveaways came in its four losses.

Offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil is the team’s best offensive lineman when he’s on the field, but keeping him on the field could be tricky. Tunsil suffered a broken leg in the Rebels’ bowl loss to TCU, and he’s dealing with some legal issues over an altercation in which he allegedly struck his stepfather. The team won’t need those kinds of off-field distractions this season.

2015 Ole Miss Rebels Prediction: 9-3

The team gets a couple tune ups prior to taking on Alabama – in Tuscaloosa, no less. Looking beyond that, the Rebels draw a pretty favorable crossover with a home date against Vanderbilt and a road date at Florida – though that trip to Gainesville is never fun.

After that it’s a home date against New Mexico State, and a road trip to Memphis – though that hardly qualifies as a tough non-conference game, even away from home. Three of the next four are at home, and avoiding trips to Arkansas and LSU is nice, but going to Starkville to play the Egg Bowl won’t be easy.
