Old Dominion Monarchs 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-2016  Football Previews – (C-USA) – Monarchs

Old Dominion is set to compete with the top-tier teams in Conference USA during the 2015-16 NCAA Football Season. While it won’t be easy, it has the offensive potential to keep up in track meets with the likes of Western Kentucky and Marshall.

The problem the Monarchs ran into last year was a mid-season mess.

C-USA Conference 2015-2016 College Football Preview- Old Dominion Monarchs

Head Coach: Bobby Wilder
2015 Record: 6-6
Old Dominion Odds to win C-USA: +6000

They started off 3-1, finished the season 3-0, but lost five straight in the middle of the 2014 campaign. Their 6-6 record wasn’t enough to get them into a bowl game.

It’s a new season, and the Monarchs are much older and prone to make a splash in the conference.

The Monarchs offer a solid shot at +6000 for starters. They get Western Kentucky at home and Marshall on the road. Those are the two key games for them if they want any hopes of winning the conference.

As far as their non-conference schedule is concerned, they get Eastern Michigan, Norfolk State, N.C. State, and App State. They should handle Norfolk State, but wins over the other three will be tough.

These games are important as far as their bowl eligibility is concerned. If they can beat EMU and App State, this team SHOULD be bowl bound when its all said and done.

Team Strengths

Plenty of backup: Old Dominion lost its four-year QB Taylor Heinicke. It’s tough to replace a guy that threw for 3467 yards and 30 touchdowns last season.

Old Dominion has the tools, though, to do just that, especially with Redshirt Freshman Shuler Bentley. Rated a 5.4 by Rivals, the RsFR was South Carolina Gatorade Player of the year twice.

He’ll have a solid running  core in the backfield with him as Ray Lawry will be a Sophomore this season. Lawry rushed for 947 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. Old Dominion was able to give him the ball and watch him gain giant chunks of yards.

Team Weaknesses

Defense: That seems to be a common theme in Conference USA. All teams lack defensive specialists. Old Dominion’s is much worse than others though. They ranked 118th in the nation allowing 38.0 points a game.

During their five-game losing skid, the lowest point total they allowed was 41 to Middle Tennessee.

Overall, they ranked 107 in total yards allowed, 115th against the rush, and 67th against passing.

The best way to get around this and avoid their abysmal 2014 was their recruiting class. Old Dominion realized this way a major problem and went out and recruited all defense. It remains to be seen, and they will be young, but the defense has potential to be much better in 2015. (Although, they couldn’t get much worse).

2015-2016 Old Dominion Season Predictions: 8-4

Old Dominion still isn’t good enough on both sides of the ball to compete with the likes of Western Kentucky and Marshall. If they can gain some momentum early, they will definitely have a chance at giving both of those teams a hard time.

However, being realistic, Old Dominion is an 8-4, 7-5 kind of team.

This squad will be bowl bound, but it’s still a ways away from competing with the top teams in C-USA.
