2011-2012 Football Previews – MAC Conference – Ohio Bobcats

It’s hard to believe, but the Ohio Bobcats have yet to win a bowl game in the 49 years that the program has competed at the FBS level.

Frank Solich has built the Bobcats into a perennial contender, but they have yet to breakout and become the top dog in the MAC.

The MAC is extremely weak this season, and Ohio certainly has a chance to make some noise in 2011.

The defense was pretty good in 2010, but they must replace seven starters from last year. The offense loses several skill positions players, but the offensive line is intact from a year ago. This is a team that has a quite a bit of talent, but like most schools in the MAC, they also have several question marks.

Can Ohio get over the hump this season?

Team Strengths:

The offensive line should be terrific in 2011. All five starters from a year ago are back, and they were solid last season. This is a veteran group that knows their blocking schemes extremely well.

The Bobcats should be able to dominate most of the defensive fronts that they see this season.

Noah Keller is back to lead an extremely strong group of linebackers. Keller missed most of last season with an injury, and he is likely the Bobcats best player on defense. Eric Benjamin and Alphonso Lewis are also dynamic players at this position. I don’t think any other team in the MAC will have the level of linebackers that the Ohio Bobcats have.

The Bobcats have plenty of depth at the wide receiver spot. Ten Bobcats caught a pass in the spring game, and this is a unit that has plenty of talent to go around.

Ohio should be able to find some deep threats as well as some possession receivers from this talented pool of wideouts.

Team Weaknesses:

Will the Bobcats be able to throw the ball at all? Phillip Bates is the likely starter under center, but he has never shown the ability to throw the football. Bates is a very good runner, but Ohio has plenty of talent on the outside and they need someone who can get the football to those wide receivers. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ohio could struggle to move the ball against top defenses in the league if they don’t have a little bit of balance in their offense.

Ohio must replace all four starting defensive linemen from last season. The Bobcats will likely be plugging in quite a few youngsters on the defensive front, which could be a bit of a problem. The lack of a pass rush could put extra pressure on the secondary as well.

The Bobcats secondary was very good last season, but they lost their best player in Julian Posey. Gerald Moore should be a solid leader at the safety position, but Ohio is liable to have some issues with inexperienced cornerbacks this season.

2011-2012 Ohio Football Prediction: 10-3

The Bobcats schedule is extremely weak, and I really think they have a decent shot to win the MAC East. The oddsmakers have Ohio at +1,000 to win the MAC Championship Game, and I think that is a very good value.

The Bobcats won’t have much of a passing game, but they will probably have the best running game in the conference. The two biggest games on the schedule both come at home in November against Temple and Miami.

Expect Ohio to take advantage of an easy schedule. I expect a big year from Solich’s Bobcats.
