MAC Conference Football Previews: Ohio

Head Coach: Frank Solich
2009 Record: 9-5

Ohio Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

They’re no Ohio State but the Ohio Bobcats were more than respectable in the MAC last year, going 9-5 and winning seven of eight conference games. This team has a few noteworthy strengths and a few noteworthy weaknesses.

The good outweighed the bad in 2009; will it happen again in 2010?

Team Strengths:

Boo Jackson returns from injury as the starting quarterback after playing just two games last year. He showed a solid grasp of the offense in 2008, however, throwing for 2,355 yards and 19 touchdowns versus 12 interceptions. If he can’t shake off the rust, junior Phil Bates will push him for playing time. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Bobcats don’t have superstars under center but their quarterback situation looks fairly stable, especially since whoever throws the ball has some viable targets in LaVon Brazill and Terrence McCrae.

Ohio’s defense is also a plus for the most part. It actually tied Texas for the national lead with 37 takeaways last season and returns seven starters from that group.

Middle linebacker Noah Keller is a beast and the leader; he made 155 tackles last season. Steven Jackson and Gerald Moore are reliable safeties.

Team Weaknesses:

The Bobcats need to do a better job establishing the run after finishing 11th in their own conference in rushing last year. Ohio returns plenty of starters on the O-line but is that a good thing? They weren’t too good last year. The other problem is that it doesn’t appear that Ohio has a true featured runner, especially since Chris Garrett is gone. Kenny Ashley has a chance to contribute but he’s unproven.

Speaking of unproven – so are the Bobcats’ corners, though their coaches are high on Omar Leftwich.

Ohio 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 9-5

Frank Solich has turned Ohio into a relevant team in the MAC and the defending East division champion. With a full season of Boo Jackson, the Bobcats have a good shot to repeat last year’s performance.

Sure, their running game is weak, but it was weak last year too and the Bobcats still went 9-5.

Now that its quarterbacking situation looks improved, I think Ohio can stay atop the East.
