Ohio Bobcats 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-2016 Football Previews (MAC) – Bobcats

The Ohio Bobcats return 10 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense. They were up and down all through the 2014 season. They’ll try to improve back to the level they were at a few years ago when they went 10-4 and 9-4 in 2011 and 2012.

MAC 2015-2016 College Football Preview – Ohio Bobcats

Head Coach: Frank Solich
2014 Record: 6-6
Odds to win MAC (from BetOnline): +800
Season Win Total (from 5Dimes):5

Expectations are higher in Athens, and they should be since this team returns 10 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense. Since 2007, Ohio has never had a year where they return more than 13 starters until this year.

An experienced team will go to battle for Ohio this year. How does the roster look?

Team Strengths

Derrius Vick was dinged up last year, so we didn’t really get to see how good he can be. I’m confident he has a high upside.

Vick is a mobile guy who can keep plays alive with his legs and then find receivers downfield. He puts a lot of pressure on the opposing defense, and defensive coordinators will have a tough time game planning against him.

If this linebacker unit can stay healthy at all, the Bobcats are going to be absolutely awesome at this spot. Jovon Johnson, Quentin Poling, and Blair Brown are all game changers, they were the top three tacklers on the team last year despite having some injury issues. In fact, they were so loaded with depth at the linebacker position that Nathan Carpenter moved back to the secondary. The Bobcats are going to be in the backfield a bunch this season.

Another really strong group defensively is the secondary. All four starters in the secondary are seniors, and that’s a really nice luxury to have. Ian Wells led the team with 12 pass breakups last year, and Devin Bass was second with nine. Having a bunch of veterans who know the system well ensures that this unit isn’t going to get beat over the top very often, and they’ll stay in their lines far more than the average secondary. Look for this secondary to be very good.

Team Weaknesses

Ohio doesn’t have many playmakers at the wide receiver spot. A couple years ago this was an area where the Bobcats were the top unit in the MAC, but now they are very close to the bottom. Vick will scramble around and get extra time, but someone needs to be getting open out there. Chase Cochran was a big loss for this group. Ohio will have to find some more reliable deep threats.

Ohio’s primary losses from last year were on the defensive line. This unit lost arguably their three best players from last year. The Bobcats have a history of putting together strong defensive lines, and their depth isn’t bad, but there are no stars here. Look for Ohio’s defensive line to get pushed around a bit against the best in the conference.

Ohio Bobcats 2015-2016 Prediction: 7-6

The Bobcats will be improved this year. Frank Solich is underrated as a coach. I think Vick is better than most people realize, and he has a solid run game behind him and a good offensive line in front of him.

The Bobcats defense will be one of the best in the MAC. I really like Ohio over 5 as a season win total pick.
