Colorado State Rams vs. No. 9 Utah Utes Preview

This Saturday evening in a Mountain West Conference game that could, and by could I mean probably, get ugly the 9th ranked Utah Utes (6-0) host the Colorado State Rams (2-5). College football lines have Utah as the HUGE favorites in this game by 30.5 points with a total of 58.

Utah is ranked in the top 10 in the nation and has yet to lose a game, but they are not getting much attention. They are the 3rd lowest ranked team in the top 10 that does not play in a BCS conference and for them to have any chance to play in a BCS game they will have to run the table for the rest of the season, which includes beating 4th ranked TCU at home in a couple of weeks. Utah has blown out all their opponents this season since beating, then, 15th ranked Pittsburgh in their season opener.

Things have not gone well for Colorado State this season at 2-5, but they come into this tough away game after a blowout win in their last game. Not only are the Rams facing an undefeated team in a road game, but the elements also seem to be against them. There is a 50% chance of rain in this game and that means the running game is vital. Colorado State only ranks 93rd in the nation in rushing yards per game while Utah ranks 32nd and not only that, but CSU’s rushing defense only ranks 103rd in the nation.

Not only are the elements against the Rams, but history is as well, as Utah has won the last 7 games against them, has a 20-game home winning streak, and the Rams have not beaten a ranked opponent since 2002.

A 30.5-point spread is a tough one to bet on, but Utah has had big spreads this season and since they have many blowouts they are a solid 5-0-1 ATS and in the last 6 meetings between these 2 teams the favorite is 4-1-1 ATS.

While Colorado State is 4-3 ATS this season and has covered the spread in their last 4 games they have only covered the spread once in the last 7 games facing Utah.

In their last games Utah beat Wyoming 30-6 and Colorado State crushed UNLV 43-10.

Utah has a very well balanced offense ranking 32nd in the nation in rushing yards per game and 39th in passing yards per game. QB Jordan Wynn did pass for 230 yards and 2 TD last week, but he was also picked off 3 times. Luckily he will not be facing a ball-hawking Rams’ secondary since they only have 2 INT this season.

Utah has a turnover differential of -6 this season and for the Rams to have any chance to pull off the massive upset they will have to force some turnovers.

Colorado has to keep the Utah rushing attack from dominating the game on the ground. The Utes feature 2 solid RB’s in Matt Asiata, who rushed for 109 yards last week, and Eddie Wide, who rushed for 56 yards and had 3 catches for 40 yards last week. Each is averaging over 5 yards per carry and they will likely improve those season averages this Saturday.

Colorado State does not feature a high-powered offense and their strength is passing the ball ranking 58th in the nation in passing yards per game. QB Pete Thomas was only 10/14 in the UNLV game, but he passed for 233 yards and had 3 TD. Thomas and the Rams rushing offense will not be able to pick up many yards against a Utah defense that ranks 7th in the nation and is stellar against both the pass and the run.

This is actually a tough game to call, as even though I am sure Utah will have no trouble winning if it rains during the game it will likely not be a high-scoring affair with all the running Utah will do. However, rain or shine the Rams are way out-matched in this game, as Utah will win and cover the big spread.

Betting Trends

Colorado State is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog of 10.5 or greater and has an Over record of 8-3-1 in their last 12 road games.
Utah is 7-0-1 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 MWC games.

Pick: Utah -30.5
