Kansas Jayhawks vs. Iowa State Cyclones Preview

In a Big 12 match up between a Jekyll and Hyde team and one where the wheels have totally fallen off the Iowa State Cyclones (4-4) host the Kansas Jayhawks (2-5). College football lines have Iowa State as 14-point favorites in this game with a total that has not been posted at time of writing.

OK, first the Jekyll and Hyde team: That would be Iowa State. Why? Well, last week they beat, then, 19th ranked Texas in Austin and in their previous 2 games they gave up 120 points and only scored 27. They have been blown out by all the ranked teams they have played this season, but luckily for them Kansas is nowhere near being ranked.

Yeah, the wheels have totally fallen off for Kansas, who has yet to win a Big 12 and heading into this game they have lost 3 straight getting killed in each one. In their last 3 games they have given up 159 points and have only scored 24. The Jayhawks rank 91st in the nation in total defense and while their pass defense isn’t terrible their rushing defense is ranking 111th.

Kansas has to turn back the clock to their 2nd game of the season when they beat Georgia Tech, who was ranked 15th in nation at the time.

Not only is Kansas 2-5 on the season, but also they are also 2-5 ATS and in their last 7 games playing at Iowa State they have only covered the spread one time.

This season Iowa State is 4-4 ATS and they have covered the spread in every home game this season. In their last games Kansas was killed losing to Texas A&M 45-10 while Iowa State upset Texas 28-21.

Iowa State was out-gained by 105 yards in the win over Texas, but their defense forced 4 turnovers. Iowa State will have to have another good rushing game like they did last week since their passing offense only ranks 103rd in the nation.

RB Alexander Robinson ran for 114 yards in the Texas win and he and duel threat QB Austen Arnaud will be counted on for most of the offense. In Kansas’ loss to Texas A&M last week they gave up 227 rushing yards and if they repeat that defensive performance they will not be leaving Ames with a win.

Kansas will not light up the scoreboard in this game not only because they have averaged 6 points per game in their last 3 games, but also because their passing and rushing offense is mediocre at best. The Jayhawks rank 83rd in the nation in passing yards per game led by QB Jordan Webb, who was 9/18 for 90 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT in the Texas A&M game and was yanked in the 2nd half since they were getting killed. Webb will be facing a suspect Cyclones’ pass D that ranks 103rd in the nation and gave up 344 passing yards against Texas.

Kansas does not have a great rushing attack ranking 69th in the nation and even though the Cyclones only rank 108th in the nation in rushing defense they did hold Texas to only 96 yards on the ground. Also, Kansas featured RB James Sims has struggled in the last 3 games only picking up 85 yards and 0 TD.

Iowa State does not have a good defense, but they may not be as bad as their rankings since they have played a killer schedule. They will take a ton of confidence from the win over Texas and in this game they will be able to run the ball at will. Robinson will have a HUGE game and the woes of Kansas will continue on both sides of the ball. Iowa State will win this game, cover the 14-point spread, and come one game closer to being bowl eligible.

Betting Trends

Kansas is 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games, and has an Over record of 6-0 in their last 6 Big 12 games.
Iowa State is 4-1 in their last 5 home games and have an Under record of 8-2 in their last 10 home games.

Pick: Iowa State -14
