Bears at Longhorns Preview

Texas (4-3) lost their 2nd straight home game last week for the first time since 1997 and to avoid losing 3 in a row at home they will have to beat the 25th ranked Baylor Bears (6-2) this Saturday. College football lines have Texas as 7-point favorites in this game with a total of 53.

OK, Baylor is a different team they have been in years’ past and that is a major understatement. Let’s look at some numbers. The Bears are ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 1993, have lost 12 straight games against Texas, and have finished last in the Big 12 in 13 of 14 seasons since joining the conference. They became bowl eligible in their win last week and if they can beat Texas this Saturday they can have their first winning season since joining the conference.

The main reason for Baylor’s rise as a team is the play of duel-threat QB Robert Griffin III, who has passed for over 2,300 yards and is the team’s 2nd leading rusher. He knows beating Texas in Austin will be tough and recently stated, “Texas is coming off an embarrassing loss. They’ll be mad.”

The aforementioned embarrassing loss Griffin was talking about was the Longhorns loss to Iowa State last week. Iowa State was 3-4 heading into the game, but Texas committed 4 turnovers and that has been the key for their demise this season. In the Longhorns 3 losses this season they have committed 11 turnovers.

Texas does have the nation’s 6th ranked defense and if they play good D and do not turn the ball over they will be in good shape. Why? Well, Texas has a decent offense, especially their passing offense, and Baylor only has the nation’s 79th ranked defense.

Texas is only 2-5 ATS this season, Baylor has covered the spread in 5 of their last 7 games in Texas, and the road team has covered the spread in 9 of the last 12 meetings between these 2 teams.

In their last games Texas lost to Iowa State 28-21 and Baylor beat Kansas State 47-42.

Texas QB Garrett Gilbert threw for a career high 344 yards in the loss to Iowa State, but he was picked off 3 times. He needs to be more careful when finding his legit receivers, as if he turns the ball over like he did in Iowa State the Longhorns will lose. Gilbert has 8 INT’s this season and only 6 TD’s.

Texas only rushed for 96 yards in the loss to Iowa State and they need to run the ball in this game to take some pressure off Gilbert. RB Foswhitt Whittaker (264 yards 2 TD) has struggled, big time, in his last 2 games with a combined 30 rushing yards and in both games he failed to average more than 2.5 yards per carry. He is joined in the backfield by RB Cody Johnson (243 yards 3 TD), who only averaged 3.4 yards per carry and gained 24 yards last week and needs to play like he did when the Longhorns beat Nebraska a couple weeks back with 73 yards averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

Griffin leads the Baylor offense that ranks 5th in the nation in yards per game. He set a school record passing for 404 yards last week. However, he is not the only weapon the Bears have, as RB Jay Finley has 697 rushing yards averaging 6.6 yards per carry this season and in the Kansas State win he set a school record with 250 rushing yards.

Texas has to contain the run in this game and in their last 2 home losses they gave up 264 rushing yards to UCLA and 199 to Iowa State.

This is a different Baylor team and one with high hopes, but those hopes will be dashed a little because there is no way Texas will play as bad as they have in their last 2 home games. The Longhorns will put on an offensive performance and while many are picking the Bears in an upset in this game I am not one of them, as Texas will win this game and cover the 7-point spread.

Betting Trends

Baylor is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog of 3.5-10, and has an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 games.
Texas is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 home games.

Pick: Texas -7
