Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-2)

It’s make or break time for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who have crucial ACC road games over the next two weeks against Clemson and Virginia Tech. Since an embarrassing home loss to Kansas in Week 2 and another tough home defeat to N.C. State in Week 4, the Yellow Jackets have rebounded with three straight victories.

We know what we get with Georgia Tech: an amazing rushing offense, a rarely used aerial attack and a so-so defense. It’s fascinating to see the triple option attack work week in, week out even when opposing defenses know the Jackets aren’t passing. Georgia Tech averages 328 rushing yards per game, good for second in the nation. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt leads the team with 649 rushing yards and Anthony Allen is close behind with 600 yards on just 99 carries. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Nesbitt isn’t a very talented passer; he’s only completed 40 per cent of his throws. When he does connect, however, it’s often for a big play. Top receiver Stephen Hill has just 11 catches in eight games but averages 23 yards per reception.

Clemson Tigers (3-3)

Plenty of bettors made a profit picking Clemson last week over Maryland. After all, the Tigers’ record was very deceiving. Their three losses came against Auburn, Miami and North Carolina – all by nine points or fewer. So it was only matter of time before Clemson teed off on a weaker opponent in a home game at Death Valley. Clemson delivered as expected with a 31-7 drubbing of Maryland last week.

Top rusher Andre Ellington was the key for Clemson last week. He ran for 41 yards and a score but also returned a kick 87 yards for a score. Quarterback Kyle Parker, however, continues to be a non-factor. He was just 7 of 20 for 106 with no touchdown passes last week.

The pick:

The six-point spread is a bit nerve-wracking. Of the past 15 games between these two, 12 of them have been decided by five points or fewer. Georgia Tech won both games last season by a combined nine points. Because of Parker’s struggles and the fact that it seems like no one can stop the triple option, i Like the Yellow Jackets to edge Clemson in yet another tight affair.
