No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 11 Missouri Tigers Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners (6-0) are the top ranked team in the BCS poll, but are #3 in the AP poll and to stay in the lead to play in the BCS title game they will have to beat the undefeated Missouri Tigers (6-0) in their house. College football lines have Oklahoma as 3-point favorites in this Big 12 match up with a total of 52.

Oklahoma did not have an easy time winning 4 of their first 5 games, but in their last game they laid a serious beat-down on Iowa State and they head into this game with Mizzou with a ton of confidence.

The Sooners have a great aerial attack ranking 12th in the nation in passing yards per game and to come out of Columbia with a win they will have to keep the ferocious pass rush of the Tigers off QB Landry Jones. This season Mizzou has the 6th most sacks in the nation with 20 and they had 7 in their last game. On top of that they will likely get back their leading pass rusher Aldon Smith, who was Big 12 freshman of the year last season with 11.5 sacks, after he missed the last  3 games with a leg injury.

The Sooners have won 7 straight against the Tigers and in the last 5 games between the 2 teams the road team has covered the spread 4 times. What also does not bode well for the Tigers in terms of betting trends is that they are only 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games. However, the Tigers have covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 games and OU is only 3-3 ATS this season.

In their last games Missouri beat Texas A&M 30-9 and Oklahoma crushed Iowa State 52-0.

Oklahoma QB Landry Jones was solid in the blowout win over Iowa State passing for 334 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT. His main target is WR Ryan Broyles, who caught 15 balls for 182 yards with 1 TD in the game. Mizzou ranks 58th in the nation in pass defense and while they only held Texas A&M to 9 points last week they gave up 322 yards in the air. Their aforementioned solid pass rush will have to get to Landry and if they cannot Jones may shred their secondary.

Sooners’ RB DeMarco Murray had 112 rushing yards and 2 TD against Iowa State last week, but the Cyclones have one of the worst rushing defenses in college football while Mizzou ranks a respectable 29th. If the Tigers allow Murray to have a good game they will be toast. Mizzou has their work cut out for them in this game, as they have to defend the pass and the run well.

Missouri will have to air it out to win since their rushing offense only ranks 84th in the nation and they will be facing the weakness of the OU defense, which is defending the pass. Tigers’ QB Blaine Gabbert is coming off his best game of the season against Texas A&M passing for 361 yards and 3 TD.

The Sooners have given up over 300 passing yards per game twice this season and Mizzou will likely make it 3, but can the Tigers’ defense stop the Sooners from lighting up the scoreboard? I don’t think so. If you check out a couple of betting trends below you will see that the Tigers are not a good betting team at home or against good teams, which Oklahoma obviously is. The Sooners will play well on offense both on the ground and in the air and while it will not be a blowout Oklahoma will win this game and cover the spread handing Mizzou their first loss of the season.

Betting Trends:

Missouri is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a home underdog, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games against teams with a winning road record, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog, and has an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 games.

Oklahoma is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite of 0.5-3, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 road games.

Pick: Oklahoma -3
