Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Colorado Buffalos Preview

This Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 match up of a couple of struggling teams that are both 3-3 the Colorado Buffalos host the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Tech has lost 3 of their last 4 games and Colorado has lost their last 2 games and has yet to win a Big 12 game. College football lines have Texas Tech as 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 57.

Both of these teams could really use a win, especially Colorado since they still have to face 3 ranked teams. They are in jeopardy of not playing in a bowl game for the 3rd straight season and to improve their chances they will have to play good pass defense against a Tech passing offense that ranks 6th in the nation.

The Buffaloes will have to play well on offense since they cannot count on their 102nd ranked defense to win the game.

Texas Tech is only 2-4 ATS this season and they have only covered the spread once in their last 5 Big 12 games.

Colorado is not much better at 3-3 ATS this season, but they are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

In their last game Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma State 34-17 and their defense gave up 581 total yards (356 passing 225 rushing). Colorado lost to Baylor last week 31-25 giving up 543 yards (234 passing 309 rushing). Neither team features a good defense and that is why the Buffaloes are betting favorites in this game since they have a better offense.

Colorado will have to run the ball to win and last week RB Rodney Stewart did his part rushing for 125 yards and 2 TD. If he can have a good game it will help keep the Buffaloes’ offense on the sidelines. However, Tech’s rushing defense is much better than the pass defense even though they played poorly last week. If the Buffaloes can contain Stewart it gives them a better chance to win.

Colorado only has the nation’s 78th ranked passing offense, but QB Tyler Hansen (1,040 yards 6 TD) will have to air it out if Stewart gets stuffed. That may not be a bad thing since the Buffaloes pass defense ranks 117th in the nation out of 120 FBS teams. That’s pretty bad. Hanson has passed for over 200 yards twice this season and this game will likely make it a third time.

QB Taylor Potts leads the Tech offense and he passed for 226 yards last week, but only led the Buffaloes to one TD. He has to get the ball to his receivers in the end zone since their rushing offense only ranks 95th in the nation. Potts will put up some big numbers in this game against a Colorado pass D that only ranks 87th in the nation. The one thing the Buffalos can do to keep Potts from ripping their secondary apart is getting to him the backfield. The Buffaloes have to give Potts protection and this season they have given up 11 sacks and the Buffalos have 11 sacks.

Tech rushed for 175 yards last week in their loss to Oklahoma State and if they can pick up some yards on the ground it will help Potts out, as he will not have to do it all. Colorado has a decent rushing defense, but they gave up 309 yards on the ground to Baylor and they cannot let that happen again.

Colorado is better than they have been in the last couple of years, but they will not be able to keep Texas Tech from lighting up the scoreboard. Even though the Buffaloes do not have a good D the Buffalos are not a high scoring team and they will not be able to keep up with Tech if this game becomes a shootout, which is likely. The Buffaloes will come out and get back in the win column and win this game and cover the spread keeping Colorado winless in the Big 12.

Betting Trends

Texas Tech is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss and has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 games as a road favorite.
Colorado 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog, and has an Over record of 6-1 in their last 7 home games.

Pick: Texas Tech -2.5 and the Over
