Iowa State Cyclones vs. Texas Longhorns Preview

Texas (4-2) may have saved their season with last week’s HUGE win over, then, 5th ranked Nebraska and this Saturday the 19th ranked Longhorns host an Iowa State squad (3-4) that has got completely demolished in their last 2 games. College betting lines have Texas as big 21-point favorites in this Big 12 game with a total of 48.

The Longhorns had lost 2 games before they beat Nebraska last week and with their 2nd loss they fell out of the rankings for the first time since 1999. They played great on both sides of the ball against Nebraska, especially on defense and they look to go 3-1 in the Big 12 with a win this Saturday.

Iowa State really needs to have a good game, as their confidence may be shot since they have given up 120 points in their last 2 games including getting shut out last week against Oklahoma. They have played poorly on both sides of the ball recently and they have a tough task, to say the least, facing a Texas team on the road that may have got their mojo back.

Texas plays 5 of their next 6 games at home and while they still have a slim chance to win the Big 12, Oklahoma would have to lose twice, they still may get a BCS Bowl bid if they can win out.

Heading into this Big 12 game Iowa State is 3-4 ATS and Texas is 2-4 ATS.

In their last games Iowa State lost to Oklahoma 52-0 and Texas beat Nebraska 20-13.

Texas QB Garrett Gilbert leads the 74th ranked offense and in the win over Nebraska he ran the ball more and rushed for 71 yards and 2 TD, but he was only 4/16 for 62 yards with 0 TD and 0 INT with his arm. However, he may not have to throw much in this game facing an Iowa State rushing defense that ranks 114th in the nation and has given up a total of 564 rushing yards in their last 2 games. The Cyclones will have a major problem keeping Gilbert and the Longhorns’ RB duo of Cody Johnson and Foswhitt Whittaker from picking up big yards on the ground.

Gilbert will have a better passing game than last week facing an Iowa State pass defense that ranks 88th in the nation and he will have time to find his receivers since the Cyclones only have 6 sacks in 7 games this season.

The Longhorns mainly won their game last week against Nebraska because they kept the great rushing offense of Nebraska in check only allowing them to gain 125 yards. Iowa State will have to run the ball in this game, but main RB Alexander Robinson still has a hurt foot and he only carried the ball a few times against Oklahoma last week.

Iowa State only has the nation’s 98th ranked passing offense and last week QB Austen Arnaud only had 102 yards. This week it may be even tougher for him since Texas has the nation’s 3rd ranked pass defense and last week only gave up 77 passing yards to Nebraska.

The Cyclones may be overmatched in this game and while it is a long shot that they will win betting on Texas is a dicey situation since they are not only a poor ATS team this season, but last season as well. The Longhorns have only covered the spread 2 times in their last 9 games and have only covered the spread once in their last 6 home games.

The Under pick may be the way to go in this game, as if you look at some betting trends Iowa State has an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 games and in their last 4 games as an underdog and Texas has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games when they are the favorite.

The Longhorns are back on track and they will want to come out and play well in front of their home crowd in this game. That is exactly what they will do, as even though they have only covered the spread in 2 of their 6 games this season this game will make it 3, as they will easily beat Iowa State and cover the 21-point spread.

Pick: Texas -21
