Virginia Tech vs. Wake Forest Free Week 7 Preview & Pick (Oct. 15)

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Gambling + Handicapping

You wouldn’t have thought so at the beginning of the season but this is an important game in the ACC right now.  Virginia Tech has to still be considered the favourite in their division but with one loss already they can not really afford another one.

Virginia Tech

They were not fantastic last week against Miami and are still searching for answers as they hit the road in the conference for the first time this season.

Virginia Tech is struggling this year due to inconsistent quarterback play – no shocker.  Their overall offensive numbers look OK but they are masking underlying deficiencies.  Nobody respects Logan Thomas’ ability to win a game for the Hokies and eventually that is going to make it harder for lead back David Wilson to continue to pile up yardage.

The Hokies and Demon Deacons have squared off just three times and Virginia Tech has won all three meetings including a 52-21 drubbing in Blacksburg last year.  Last year the Hokies completely shut down the Wake Forest passing attack as they completed just 4 passes.  This year that same facet of the game has improved tremendously which gives the Deacons a chance to upset at home.

Wake Forest

Things are really looking great for Wake Forest right now.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

After losing their opener at Syracuse they have reeled off 4 straight victories and after last week’s upset of Florida State they are 3-0 in the ACC Atlantic Division.  It won’t be easy to maintain that kind of perfection as their schedule stiffens but nobody thought these guys were going to beat FSU last week and they did.  They have to be considered a contender and threat to Clemson.

This season is all about QB Tanner Price for Wake Forest.  As a freshman he struggled with a low completion percentage and too many turnovers.  This year he has been fantastic   He has nearly eclipsed his yardage total from a year ago and has already thrown for more TDs – 10.  He has also setup Chris Givens to become one of the more productive receivers in the conference – he too has already surpassed his numbers from a year ago.

At the same time the defense has improved significantly.  Last year they gave up an average of almost 36 points per game and this year that figure is down to 23.  This is especially impressive because the Deacons have been playing conference foes mostly with only one non BCS opponent in the opening month of their schedule.  Wake Forest has dropped all of its previous meetings with Virginia Tech by an average of 20ppg.  This is a good measuring stick for the development of the program.

ATS Pick:  Virginia Tech -7
Over/Under Pick:  Over
Score Prediction:  Virginia Tech 35 – Wake Fores 24
