Have the Virginia Tech Hokies finally turned a corner? They lost a heartbreaking opener to Boise State and got embarrassed by James Madison at home to open 2-0 but have seriously bounced back. Since rallying to outscore South Carolina 28-3 in the second half of Week 3, the Hokies have outscored their opponents 47-3 over their last six quarters, as they walloped Boston College 19-0 last week.

Virginia Tech’s offense has taken a step forward in 2010. Tyrod Taylor has completed 65.3 per cent of his passes, thrown for five scores and rushed for 201 yards to lead the team. The Hokies average 180.3 rushing yards and 28.5 points per game. Their traditionally strong defense started poorly this season but has seriously rallied in recent weeks. It held Boston College to 250 total yards last week, tallying four sacks and picking off Dave Shinskie twice.

But will the N.C. State Wolfpack give Virginia Tech’s “D” a tougher test this week? [soliloquy id=”82219″]

(23) North Carolina State Wolfpack (4-0)

Sooner or later, we have to start taking N.C. State seriously. Beating big programs like Cincinnati and Georgia Tech has to mean something, doesn’t it? Yet the Wolfpack are still four-point underdogs at home.

A powerful offense like Boise State moved the ball against Virginia Tech earlier this season and N.C. State, at least on paper, looks like it could do the same. The Wolfpack average 37 points and 434 yards of offense per game.

The road win over Georgia Tech really raised eyebrows last week. N.C. State totalled 527 yards and quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 368 yards and three touchdowns.

The pick:

It wasn’t just the offensive explosion against Georgia Tech that put N.C. State on the map and vaulted them into the national top 25 last week. It was the Wolfpack’s defensive effort.

They “held” Georgia Tech to 248 rushing yards and 5.1 yards per carry. That doesn’t sound like an accomplishment at first, but the Yellow Jackets average 320.5 rushing yards per game and 5.9 yards per carry.

Virginia Tech’s offensive strength is its rushing attack. If N.C. State could contain the most prolific rushing offense of this generation last week on the road, shouldn’t it handle Virginia Tech at home? Given what the Wolfpack showed on both sides of the ball last week, I like them to stay undefeated and “upset” Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Virginia Tech vs N.C. State prediction: N.C. State 28, Virginia Tech 24
