Virginia Tech Hokies (1-2)

It’s been a rough start for the Virginia Tech Hokies, who hoped to be national title contenders but have already lost their shot after losing their first two games.

The first loss was excusable, as it was a 33-30 heartbreaker against Kellen Moore and third-ranked Boise State. That was a tough game to win no matter how good Virginia Tech was. But the following week was a nightmare; Virginia Tech lost to James Madison at home. Ouch. The Hokies finally bounced back to beat East Carolina 49-27 but needed a 28-3 second half to come from behind and win that one.

Offense hasn’t been the problem. As predicted, Virginia Tech has fielded a much improved attack so far. Tyrod Taylor has thrown for 501 yards with five touchdowns and just one interception. He has also run for 191 yards and along with Ryan Williams forms the nation’s 26th-ranked rushing offense.

Strangely enough, the problem has been defense. The Hokies got their success stopping other teams more than scoring on them in recent years but that’s no longer the case. Moore moved the ball on them and James Madison did enough to win. Virginia Tech can only hope their showing in the second half against East Carolina was its “true” defense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Boston College Eagles (2-0)

Though Weber State and Kent State aren’t exactly elite opponents, Boston College can’t complain about its 2-0 start.

That said, I wonder if the Eagles are pretenders. Quarterback Dave Shinskie hasn’t passed for more than 223 yards in either of Boston College’s wins. Last week against Kent State, Boston College ran for just 87 net yards and benefitted hugely from five turnovers by the Golden Flashes. The Eagles’ defense obviously deserves some credit but when a team gives the ball away that often it’s almost handing over a free victory.

The pick:

Look for Virginia Tech to show that it can still win the ACC and for Boston College to get a wakeup call this week. The Eagles’ offense has done enough to win but Virginia Tech gained confidence last week and should be eager to show that it can still be a shutdown unit. Boston College also hasn’t faced an offense as good as Virginia Tech’s yet – especially on the ground.
